Publisher's Summary

In the next installment of the New York Times best-selling Throne of Glass series, follow Chaol on his sweeping journey to a distant empire.

Chaol Westfall has always defined himself by his unwavering loyalty, his strength, and his position as the captain of the Guard. But all of that has changed since the glass castle shattered, since his men were slaughtered, since the king of Adarlan spared him from a killing blow, but left his body broken.

His only shot at recovery lies with the legendary healers of the Torre Cesme in Antica - the stronghold of the southern continent's mighty empire. And with war looming over Dorian and Aelin back home, their survival might lie with Chaol and Nesryn convincing its rulers to ally with them.

But what they discover in Antica will change them both - and be more vital to saving Erilea than they could have imagined.

What's Chaol been up to?

First of all, I adore this book series. Right from the beginning. Having said that: Chaol is not my favorite character by any means. He's blindly loyal, broods too much, and has made some really bad decisions...which is exactly why we needed this book. I want to go right back to where we left Aelin, but the fact is that this book tied several pieces of information together. We learned so much new information as well, and Chaol got a lot of personal redemption. He's still not my favorite character, but I really like Yrene. We got a ton of character development out of Nezrin, which was needed.
In the end, this will not be anyone's favorite book of the series, but it is a necessary part of the whole.

I was reluctant to read this as I am not a fan of its main character, but have to say it was the best one yet!

LOVED!!!!

I was not really excited about this novella, but OMG it was so amazing! I could not get enough of it! I was so excited to finish it but didn’t want it to end at the same time. Definitely a must read... or listen.

An Offshoot From The Main Storyline

First of all, Chaol is my least favorite character in the Throne of Glass series (which is one of my all time favorites) so I wasn't thrilled to get into a whole book about him. That said, there was quite a bit revealed that will be necessary to the next book in the series. I enjoyed the Nesryn and the Prince story line and even the Chaol and Irene story line.

This book lacked the excitement of the others. I feel like these stories could have been part of the other books and didn't need to be so long but I'm glad I know what I know now and CANNOT wait for the next book due out in 2018.

This is basically a stretched out Novella

This book is basically a long drawn out novella. The story line was OK at best and definitely not what I would have used as the next book in the series. It's very slow going and doesn't really pick up.

A-FREAKING-MAZING

I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end! I started it very hesitantly because I hated Chaol, the main character because of his douchebag ways in previous books. (I'll add I loved him the first two, till he changed my mind in book three)

Anyways, the book starts out with Chaol and Nesryn (my least favorite character) going to the legendary healers of the Torre Cesme in Antica to see if he can be healed.

Yrene Towers who w've previously met briefly in the Assassin's Blade is featured as a main character as well. Both she and Chaol must work together, both having huge chips on their shoulders from past experiences, both in desperate need of healing. . .

This book gives us lots of information key to the series, and by the end of if I have to admit I have fully forgiven and fallen in love with Chaol once more.

The Throne of Glass series is one of my absolute favorite series of all time! And this book is essential and just as good as the others in my opinion! Aelin makes a teeny tiny appearance in the very last chapter, making the reader squeal and desperately want the next and final book in this amazing series NOW. Sadly, well have to be patient and wait until next year.

I HIGHLY recommend this book! I will write no more as I myself LOVE spoilers, so intern I'm a walking spoiler. lol Hopefully I've given just enough to make you realize if you care for the series at all you MUST buy this book!

Amazing performance makes up for it

Elizabeth Evans is one of my favourite audio narrators, and she really brings this whole series alive- and I think without these audio books I would've stopped reading this series by now.

I was worried to pick up this book as it focuses on Chaol (my personal least favourite character) and a bunch of new and side characters. I enjoyed it better than expected, but can't say I've grown fond of any of these characters despite spending 600+ pages / 20+ hours with them. The plot felt streamlined, a few important details and twists but otherwise a rather by the numbers Sarah J Maas book. All the character relations and developments were predictable, and she has so many characters that a lot of their personalities are starting to overlap and show troupes within her own books. With audio, and all the brothers and sisters with unusual fantasy names, it took a long time to learn characters names, or to even recognise who was who- I got through that mostly via context until near the end of the novel.

The best part of this book was Choals recovery process. I was worried how that would be handled, and I've heard mixed things about the representation (but mostly good things from own voices reviews that I saw browsing goodreads before I picked this up). I had one or two issues with it, but overall thought it was done well and was satisfied with how he ended up.

Overall, amazing narrator, entertaining, but nothing outstanding compared so some of Maas's other novels.

Boring

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Less romance and more action.

What could Sarah J. Maas have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The original character had depth and colour to his personality, which was lost in this book. Unfortunately this was below par.

What didn’t you like about Elizabeth Evans’s performance?

Her delivery which is becoming very drawn out.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Tower of Dawn?

Probably about half the book. Not much happened but it took forever to come to a conclusion

Any additional comments?

I think this was more of a romance than science fantasy. Which is not to my taste. However, others might prefer it that way.

A Welcome Break

I was wondering what had happened to Chaol. It was good to leave all of the black magic and killing behind for a short time and escape. Chaol's story is one of despair, triumph and heartache, which love will conquer. But it is not long before the darkness returns to claim more lives.

A lot better than I thought it would be!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It was a slow starter but I think that was just because there was a lot of new characters to introduce but then it did get going and I liked it. I loved hearing more about the Valg and the history. I just can't wait for everything to come together in the final book. I just hope it will be as good and I think it will.

I said I wasnt going to continue with this series... but I am SO GLAD I did! I went from not liking/being uninterested in Chaol to him being one of my favourite characters of all time. I shed so many tears through this book. The performance was simply incredible. I definitely recommend.

A pleasant surprise!

When I first heard that the last ToG book wouldn't be happening for another year and ToD would be released instead, I wasn't happy.

I really wanted to know how Aelin was going to get out of her mess and how Maeve would finally get what was coming to her. Tower of Dawn did an excellent job of keeping me occupied until then.

I loved reading about Chaol and Nesryn and meeting all the new characters. Yrene was new to me as I haven't read The Assassins Blade so bits and pieces didn't make total sense but that didn't matter.

The story was never boring and as always I'm amazed how SJM manages to weave such an intricate plot and still manage to the everything up by the end.

I'm giving ToD 5 stars because my annoyance went right out the window when I started getting in to the story and I finished it within a week (with a small child to look after). I can't wait to see what SJM does next.

My favourite book of the series

I put off reading this book for almost a year, and halted on the previous book twice, I was convinced I’d hate it and at first I wasn’t impressed but I was an idiot and I have fallen for Chaol all over again, and let’s not forget the incredible new characters that I have swooned and fallen for as well. They are awesome and simply everything, I’m anxious and excited for the next book.
