Publisher's Summary

"A spellbinding book about a missing child, and about the life of a writer. Bold, suspenseful, and impossible to put down. This one will stay with me for a long time." (Samantha Downing, number one internationally best-selling author of My Lovely Wife)

The acclaimed author of The Nanny and What She Knew - hailed by stalwarts including Ruth Ware, Liane Moriarty, Rosamund Lupton, Tess Gerritsen, and Shari Lapena - returns with another serpentine thriller that cleverly blends atmosphere, tarnished memories, mystery, and twisty secrets from the past into a potent, intense listen that will leave you questioning everything you believe.

To tell you the truth...everybody lies.

Lucy Harper’s talent for writing best-selling novels has given her fame, fortune, and millions of fans. It’s also given her Dan, her needy, jealous husband whose own writing career has gone precisely nowhere.

Now Dan has vanished. But this isn’t the first time that someone has disappeared from Lucy’s life. Three decades ago, her little brother, Teddy, also went missing and was never found. Lucy, the only witness, helplessly spun fantasy after fantasy about Teddy’s disappearance, to the detectives’ fury and her parents’ despair. That was the start of her ability to tell a story - a talent she has profited from greatly. But now Lucy’s a grown woman who can’t hide behind fiction any longer. The world is watching, and her whole life is under intense scrutiny. A life full of stories, some more believable than others. Could she have hurt Teddy? Did she kill Dan?

Finally, now, Lucy Harper’s going to tell the truth.

Cross her heart.

And hope to die.

“One of the most unsettling - and unforgettable - heroines I’ve ever met.” (Shari Lapena, New York Times best-selling author of The Couple Next Door)

Bravo! Best book this year!

This book totally kept me engaged.... hanging on every chapter and eager to finish. It’s been a while since I’ve loved a book this much... reminiscent of Gone Girl, but different enough. Don’t hesitate to purchase! Fabulous narrator as well!

Great book, awesome narrator.

Book was great. I did get thrown off a couple of times by the ever changing time line. Like it could be a minute or two into the chapter before I realized it and I would just start that chapter over so I would be able to fully get it. Please don't let that one fact keep you from getting the book tho, it will be worth it. The narrator is probably one of the best ones I've heard. Top five for me honestly. I wasn't super crazy about the ending. I won't spoil it, I'll just say that I like a book ending to completely tie up loose ends. I am still happy with it tho. This is the 4th novel I've listened to from this author. I'll continue checking out new work and plan to listen to all of her previous books.

Wonderful Writing & Narration

I would listen to this book again and again solely for the beautifully crafted prose and expert narration. Lucy was such a vivid character, I felt as though I’d actually met her. Wonderful writing.

Excellent book!

I never post reviews but I felt I had to with this book. It was one of the very few that I have found to be completely unputdownable! Both the writing and the narration were excellent. The tension was maintained throughout the book. Very enjoyable.

Excellent story that gives up on the last 10 pages

This book had me hooked at first: unusual format, compelling characters, Macmillan’s excellent writing. But the ending seems to disregard everything meaningful in the story. Not every mystery needs a “bad guy in handcuffs” ending, but the wrap up of “to tell you the truth” is unsatisfying to the point of total irrelevance. What a shame!

What happened to Teddy?

This was a very good book. I wish the ending was a little different! Love all her other books.
