Publisher's summary

The darkness holds more than just secrets....

Marked for death, Sabine escaped from her home more than ten years ago.

But the Wild Hunt will never give up.

It should have been easy to stay hidden. All Sabine had to do was keep her head down, avoid telling anyone about her past, and above all else—not let her glamour drop.

Even the best-laid plans eventually fall apart.

When a charismatic stranger arrives in the city, Sabine finds herself unwittingly drawn to the power she can sense hidden within him. Keeping her distance is nearly impossible, especially after a life debt is called due and she’s tasked into helping steal a rare artifact.

Sabine is the only one who can break the magical barriers protecting the item, but that means revealing the truth about her identity and exposing her darkest secrets.

Unfortunately, the Fae aren’t the only ones hunting her.

And the most dangerous monsters aren’t always confined to the dark.

Everything about this is amazing!

I am SO glad I picked this up. It is attention getting right from the start. The writing in here seems to appeal to something in Me. I love the intrigue, the bits of information given and the relationships between the characters. It all keeps me going and wanting to know who, what, when, where and why.

This is filled with a plethora of wonderful and amazing characters. Pixies, witches, faeries, goblins and demons among others. I rarely say this but I came to enjoy meeting each one of them. Their relationships are so interwoven couldn't wait to figure them out. Who controls who? Whom are friends/hates who?
Who is stronger? Who is lying and why? I was so happy to get these answered among others throughout the book.

The story is fast paced and is intricately woven to give me some Information. But I am a puzzler so I need to figure out the unasked questions. Therefore I could hardly put this down. Because just when I figured out one thing…another would catch my interest and I'm off again. Everything was explained so well and at the perfect time. Not too much background information at any given moment.
This is a first time author for me! I am impressed with the quality of work done on this book. I think she hit ALL the marks for a story well done. I absolutely LOVED it and highly recommend to all Paranormal lovers!

I listened to this on audio. Meg Price ROCKED this narration! I loved listening to her bring all these characters to life. She was the perfect pick for this story.

Original and Entertaining!

This was my first Jamie Waters's book. This is the first book in The Dragon Portal series. This is a great start to the series. The characters are amazing! The storyline is original, entertaining, and captivating, filled with action, and twists and turns. I liked the imaginative writing. Meg Price did an excellent job bringing this story to life. Looking forward to listening to By Bloom and Magic, the next book in the series. to know what happens next. #PFPAudio

Revelations

There are so many truths that get revealed in the this story of Sabina and the people who have been a part of her life. The story starts with an attack on Sabina’s life and the introduction of the ship’s captain. There is a lot of twists and turn. Be aware that the story ends with a a cliff hanger so be prepared to not have everything resolved by the end of the book. I listened to the audio version and it was very dramatic. #CMCon24

A very entertaining romantic fantasy; slow start

This is a very entertaining and well written romantic urban fantasy or epic fantasy. The tense first scene got me interested, but then there was about an hour when I was bored until things became interesting again. The heroine Sabine, Malick, and Bain were all intriguing and likeable characters, but Dax is an obnoxious control freak who acts like a Mafia don throwing his weight around. The hour that bored me to death mostly had Dax acting like a pain. Sabine is a moral, likeable person, but she is justifiably ruthless in defending herself with deadly force (in a place without a useful police force). I did enjoy the internally cohesive magical methods and history of that fantasy world. I am looking forward to starting book 2 of this trilogy.
For people squeamish about blood, there is a lot of intentional bleeding from a hand. This book has some moderate violence, but the romantic component is mostly kissing. There is a hint of the heroine having a sort of harem (it is unclear how much sex happened in the past) with two men at a time, and possibly adding a third.
The narration by Meg Price was very good. I thought that she spoke a little too slowly, so I sped it up to 1.2x and I really liked the performance. She is expressive, versatile, and enunciates the right amount. I love her voice for the heroine and her best friend, and all of her men’s voices are believable and distinct from each other. Meg Price’s voice for Malick is suitably sexy, and I could listen to it for hours.
I requested and received a free audio copy from the Flock, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. #FiresideAudio #TheFlockVIPReviewTeam

Finally!

I’m relieved to find a series I’m excited to continue and that isn’t a YA romance with an immature lead character. The story and characters are interesting and well developed. The heroine is strong in all the right ways, which is appealing to a wider audience who cares about the storyline and can project ourselves into the author’s world. The chemistry between the main characters is a slow burn that seems more realistic in the actual story timeline and doesn’t attempt to use sex scenes to keep the reader engaged. It’s a story made for those of us who can imagine these magical creatures and enjoy the journey and not just the destination to the bedroom- although I will certainly enjoy how the author will weave her own magic when they finally do give in to passion and get down to business!

FANTASTIC!!

I was so impressed with this audiobook! It was fantastic. And I don't use that word lightly. It's hard to find such a well-written fantasy book with such a smart plot, lovable characters, and an actual ending to the story while still leaving wanting more. I hope she puts out another 10 books, minimum for this series. Waters also picked a brilliant narrator for this! I hope she comes back for book 2.

Recently a lot of authors have been taking one decent novel and chopping it up to make 3 sometimes 4 books out of it. The books would be like 140 pages. It drives me nuts! The books are like 2 hours long. Put all 4 books together and you'd have a great novel. That has been a big thing in fantasy lately. And I can honestly say that this book is far from being anything like that! It is an actual, complete novel. And I can't wait for #2!

Thanx #Firesideaudio for another fantastic book! And #TheFlockVIPReviews. #PinkFlamingo
