Publisher's Summary

“I can’t imagine a scenario where this isn’t one of the more important - and breathlessly debated - books of the year.” (Dave Eggers)

From a thrilling new talent, Three Women is an astonishing work of narrative journalism - reported over eight years - about the sex lives and desires of three ordinary American women.

Lina, a homemaker in suburban Indiana, is a decade into a passionless marriage when she embarks on an affair that quickly becomes all-consuming and transforms her life. Sloane, a glamorous entrepreneur in the Northeast, is married to a man who likes to watch her have sex with other men and women. Maggie, a high school student in North Dakota, begins a relationship with her English teacher that will have extraordinary consequences for them both - as well as the community in which they live.

For nearly a decade, Lisa Taddeo, an award-winning journalist and longtime contributor to New York Magazine and Esquire, embedded herself with three everyday women to write this deeply immersive account of their erotic lives and longings. The result - shocking, powerful, and timely - comes across like George Packer’s The Unwinding, but for the state of female desire. Three Women is a major work from an exhilarating new voice.

Shocking and sensitive

Great book with fair handling of a difficult subject. The themes in the three wildly different stories are expertly drawn together. Difficult to read without feeling both the thrill and pain of the three protagonists.

Interesting but lispy

I just couldn't do the author's lisp. Mena Suvari's narration was a relief. Stories were interesting. Provocative. The writing captured much of the complexity of human emotions. Although I would not reread or listen again, I would be interested in the author's future works.

Do it! Literally do IT!

Phenomenal writing, an absolute must read for women who are engaged in (lucky ladies), trying to understand (that’ll never end), intrigued by (who’s not) or disoriented by (it happens too often) by sex. All written from the female perspective, I simply loved this book. I’m an avid audible junkie and haven’t heard such raw and true stories in way too long, probably ever. The art was in the writing of the art of sexual engagement of women. Male readers too will be wholly enlightened and quite frankly proficiently turned on by the avenues that create the desire that seeps from our hearts and ends up between our legs.

Non-fiction, really?

I am shocked at the number of good reviews for this book. It read like a soft porn, romance novel. The authour supposedly followed these women for eight years but there is no real conclusion to any of the stories.
I guess to each her own but it was really just depressing.

well written

Woman are so much more than we are ever portrayed in society. This book really goes in deep into these three woman's minds as the navigate some pretty tough situations. It reminds and haunts you with memories when you didn't believe a woman or judged them based on what... probably nothing of substance. Woman are their own tough critic but so are other woman. Its well performed and narratored.

Well written, juicy, intimate but tragic

I gave it 4 stars instead of 3 for it’s brutal honesty and deep thoughts. I think the book would have been more satisfying if it had also represented women who were more fulfilled and who had a more level relationship with men. I also give kudos for the writing, details. I noticed that descriptions using the sense of smell were more frequently given than most books I’ve read, and I enjoyed that added level of detail.

A Hit

Is it weird that I feel like i can relate to all 3? not whole story wise, but bits and pieces and its crazy that all of is think the same(women) It was shocking how good this was and how easy it was to follow along with the story switching between women. I feel the author captured the feelings and emotions of each woman. Great read!

Well written and interesting

I really found this book captivating. It reads like a work of fiction. And in ways it is. It's like a tale of 3 women very closely tied to real life events. And it's about a topic we all find fascinating. . . sex. But after finishing this book (I keep wanting to say novel) I'm left wondering what was the point? Other than to entertain, that is. And for me, entertain it does.
