"To be on fire and shine light on your surroundings"—this is the meaning of Foroozan's name, and the essence of her extraordinary journey from persecution to liberation.

Trapped in a brutally violent marriage, Foroozan makes an unthinkable choice to protect her children. When her decision puts her behind the bars of an Afghan women’s prison, she is surprised to discover her first taste of freedom.

But freedom proves fragile. As American troops begin their withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, Foroozan faces new threats: her husband's vengeful family and the encroaching shadow of the Taliban. With everything at stake, she must navigate a maze of harrowing choices to survive and secure her children's future.

In this heart-pounding two-part memoir, a young Afghan mother shows us the true meaning of courage and resourcefulness in the face of violence, war, and political abandonment.

I loved her endurance and strength. She showed the power of a mother's love and how it makes mother's strong.

As an American woman who has lived most of my life without a man, I am feeling very grateful and blessed. I cannot even begin to imagine just how harrowing and frightening life had to be for this brave woman. If I could tell her anything…Yes you are living your best life now. Yes, you are right….keep helping others. It feels good to do so. Your job is NOT DONE ‼️‼️ You are still breathing. You have raised your children. Now it’s YOUR time. I’m so glad you’re here. ❤️‍🩹❤️🎶🕊️ Peace and richest blessings. And so it is. Amen

The humanity of this woman and the selflessness of all those that helped her can never erase brutality of those that sought to diminish her and deprive her her personhood; but. even in the darkest of days (and she had a lot of them ) there’s potential for light. I’m so glad that I listened to this memoir.

It will touch your heart. This memoir is a real gem.
