Publisher's Summary

Grand Admiral Thrawn and Darth Vader team up against a threat to the Empire in this thrilling novel from best-selling author Timothy Zahn.

'I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.'

Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root - its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fierce rivals for the emperor’s favour, and outspoken adversaries on Imperial affairs - including the Death Star project - the formidable pair seem unlikely partners for such a crucial mission. But the Emperor knows it’s not the first time Vader and Thrawn have joined forces. And there’s more behind his royal command than either man suspects.

In what seems like a lifetime ago, General Anakin Skywalker of the Galactic Republic and Commander Mitth’raw’nuruodo, officer of the Chiss Ascendancy, crossed paths for the first time. One on a desperate personal quest, the other with motives unknown...and undisclosed. But facing a gauntlet of dangers on a far-flung world, they forged an uneasy alliance - neither remotely aware of what their futures held in store.

Now, thrust together once more, they find themselves bound again for the planet where they once fought side by side. There they will be doubly challenged - by a test of their allegiance to the Empire...and an enemy that threatens even their combined might.

A Darth Vader as you can't imagine. and Thrawn being Thrawn. let's hope they take some of this store to make a new cartoon between Grand admiral Thrawn and Ezra in Unknown region of the galaxy far far way.

An excellent book

The story line is very well written. The story takes place both in pre-empire and empire switching between Thrawn working with Darth Vader and Anakin(And Padme). I can only recommend this book for anyone who is fan of either Thrawn or Darth Vader(Or even both). It brings back many plotlines from his older Thrawn book series that is now considered Legend.

Unique character

Some of the canon books for me are better than the recent Last Jedi movie, Bloodlines, Catalyst and the two Thrawn novels. It is great to see the Star Wars world expand into this territory.

Thrawn is a particularly excellent addition to the canon, let’s hope he enters the movies. This novel is as good as the first and touches on Vader in the best way I have read outside of the Skywalker saga.

Performance strong as always but story disappoints

Overall I think this book is essential listening/ reading for anyone interested in the Rebels TV series. If you're not a fan of that series you can probably be forgiven for not going any further as the first book was so strong.
Where I think the book falls short is the lack of a consistent regular adversary for Thrawn and Vader to fight and that completely depletes the urgency of the situation in the eyes of the reader. And I personally feel the clone wars segments of this book bar 1 or 2 chapters are incredibly weak in nature.
All that being said the story does pick up in the second half and is worth it for that but ultimately I hope in the third book, if there is a third book they put in a convincing adversary for Thrawn to face.

Timothy Zahn delivers again

Really good pace throughout the story and links to the previous interactions between Thrawn and Anakin Skywalker.

Not so great..

Story: too confusing and disjointed, the pacing is enough to keep the listener engaged but all the monologue gets tiring. The exposition and dialogue is long winded and takes away from the story.
The voice acting is hit and miss..Thrawn is A+ 100% perfect. Anakin is good too but Vader...ehh...needed the voice/modulation to sound like him. Palme was awful. Would it have been so difficult to use a woman?
The music is the usual but over used I think..sound effects are decent and add a nice touch. I didn’t enjoy the story and felt an opportunity was lost by not exploring the force sensitives, the politics between Chiss/Grisk worlds and even the impact of the mine collapse on Mokifchu (?).
Far from a favourite, bit of a chore to get through. You aren’t missing anything by skipping this one. Even for hardcore fans.

Enjoyable

I love anything Thrawn related I just found the character of Anakin to grate on the nerves, voice acting is of the highest quality Sound fx on points. But the story not as engaging as the previous book still well worth a listen. My biggest flaw personally is that I couldn’t help but see Thrawn and Vader as a couple they sure bicker like one

Only bad/terrible Star Wars book I've listened too

Don't "hang in there" waiting for it to get good. IT DOESN'T!! The plot starts off slow and devoid of any mystery and doesn't change the whole way through!

Yes it was narrated well, like all the other Star Wars books, but that's the only positive thing I can say about it!

Save your money/credit and get any other Star Wars book. Whatever you choose it'll be a lot better!
