THEN:
It’s one of the galaxy’s most dangerous secrets: a mysterious transmitter with unknown power and a reward for its discovery that most could only dream of claiming. But those who fly the Millennium Falcon throughout its infamous history aren’t your average scoundrels. Not once, but twice, the crew of the Falcon tries to claim the elusive prize—first, Lando Calrissian and the droid L3-37 at the dawn of an ambitious career, and later, a young and hungry Han Solo with the help of his copilot, Chewbacca. But the device’s creator, the volatile criminal Fyzen Gor, isn’t interested in sharing. And Gor knows how to hold a grudge. . . .
NOW:
It’s been ten years since the rebel hero Han Solo last encountered Fyzen Gor. After mounting a successful rebellion against the Empire and starting a family with an Alderaanian princess, Han hasn’t given much thought to the mad inventor. But when Lando turns up at Han’s doorstep in the middle of the night, it’s Fyzen’s assassins that he’s running from. And without Han’s help, Lando—and all life on Cloud City—will be annihilated.
With the assistance of a young hotshot pilot, an Ewok slicer prodigy, the woman who might be the love of Lando’s life, and Han’s best and furriest friend, the two most notorious scoundrels in the New Republic are working together once more. They’ll have to journey across the stars—and into the past—before Gor uses the device’s power to reshape the galaxy.

There’s a universality to the Star Wars franchise, a world so sprawling that no matter who you are, you’re bound to find something—an adventure, a moment, a character—that resonates with you. And if you were to ask any fan, they’d likely be able to recount a memory directly tied to the series. On a 2021 journey from the East Coast to the Outer Rim, one Audible editor and Star Wars superfan saw all of her wildest, most interstellar dreams become reality.

Where does Last Shot rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
As a big fan of Han Solo, for me, this book ranked as a slightly above average Star Wars Story. It had a couple of moments that made me genuinely laugh out loud and all the adventure that I’d expect from this universe. What other book might you compare Last Shot to and why?
Uh, in someways, I suppose that it compares to Scoundrels by Timothy Zhan. In the sense that it is very much a Han and Lando story with a cast of interesting side characters. In other respects, Han in the Disney canon is just different than he used to be and this entry continues that conflict that he has with wanting to roam the galaxy, but also needing to be with Leia and their young son.
Also this story bounces you around to a lot of different time periods that come together in the end. Which isn’t the way most Star Wars books, up to this point, have been written.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Marc Thomson, as usual, is terrific. I swear he brings about 20 to 50 different combinations of voices, dialects and accents to each Star Wars adventure that he’s reading. His Lando is especially on point, imho. Some people mentioned not particularly enjoying January’s preformances for the ‘Young Lando’ segments, but she made a great reader for the female droid character— who in my opinion, was the more significant presence in that part of the story.
Daniel Jose Older reads the ‘Young Han’ parts. The performance was pretty good and there were certain beats that he hit in reading the story that he knew to emphasize because he is the author. When you’re reading a story along side of Marc Thompson, though, it’s difficult to compare favorably.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
“We’re going to figure it out together.”An entertaining story featuring the scoundrels.
