Publisher's summary

Welcome to Spellford Cove, where the baking is sweet and the witches are wild.

Robin Carter's life is less than stellar. All she has going for her are a minimum-wage job she hates, an uncanny ability to attract the biggest losers on her dating app, and a raccoon sitting in her kitchen sink eating her chips. So, when she finds out she's inherited a bakery in a small Washington town, Robin thinks this might just be the fresh start she desperately needs. Upon her arrival, however, Robin finds out she's inherited more than just a small business: she's also got her mother's magical powers.

However, things start going south for Robin when a man dies at the local diner just after her arrival in town and she's fingered as the prime suspect. With half the town thinking she's a killer, Robin decides to take matters into her own hands. But between a ghost who desperately needs therapy, a snarky familiar who loves to quote literature, and a grandmother who walks to the beat of her own drum, Robin really has her hands full.

Will she be able to navigate this new reality and find the killer, or will she crumble like an overcooked brownie?

This is the first book in the Spellford Cove paranormal cozy mystery series.

Super light

It was amusing and fun until about 3/4 of the way in, and then it just got really stupid.

Loved it

Samantha Silver has crafted a great first installment in the Spellford Cove Mystery series. The storyline takes a hold of you in the beginning and never lets loose. The characters are those who seem more like friends instead of characters. Jill Smith gave an excellent performance as she brought the storyline to life, and gave distinct voices to each character. I look forward to the next in series. I highly recommend this book/audiobook to cozy mystery fans.

I Disagree

When I read the reviews about mispronounced words, shallow plot lines, underdeveloped characters, yadda yadda yadda, I almost passed on this little book. Then I listened to the sample narrative and read the publisher's sales pitch. It sounded light and funny. I was right. If you are looking for literature, see your friendly librarian, this is light, rocking chair fiction meant to be fun, not deep. Give it a try, you'll be delightfully surprised and wish for...sure, more fully developed characters, but I will try the next little book for the next layers of the sweet treat, myself.

Series Review

This is a fun series. It's not particularly inspired, but it's fun and I found myself rooting for the protagonist. The narrator carries the books through rough spots that speak of inadequate editing. That makes these a good choice for audio. If you are particularly annoyed by continuity errors (between books and even within books) or characters with an impossible amount of life experience and knowledge given their ages, then these books aren't a good choice for you. Otherwise, I can recommend them. They read like they were written by a librarian.

The Witching Flour

Cosy story. Narration was okay. I liked the voice she give to the characters. Except for the cat. I think I would have like something a little higher pitched. Still she made the story interesting. A fun story.
