Publisher's Summary

The dwarves have gone to battle, and they have been victorious. But outside the realm, dark forces are at work.

A secret army of Orcs, made immortal by the hidden powers of the Black Water, now marches towards Girdlegard, set to unleash its fury upon the kingdom. Sooner than they realize, Tungdil and his comrades will need to summon all their courage to do battle against this bloodthirsty horde.

The Orcs are not the only threat. An unspeakable new power is growing and threatens the very existence of the dwarves. But both enemies have forgotten one very important truth: A dwarf is never more dangerous than when total obliteration seems inevitable.

Why change narrator?!

I can never understand why so many audiobooks change narrators in sequels. Brand consistency, hello?? Especially when you go from great narrator to... whatever the hell you’d call the train wreck of missed social queues and misread emotions that Neil Dicksinmouth brought to this installment.

I tolerated the new narrator for a while. Not the voices I was used to. As soon as he reached a song though, IT WAS BUTCHERED. I expected misty mountain and I got a disgruntled, rythm deaf mixture of William shatner and Alfred pennyworth doing drunk slam poetry karaoke.

That did it for me. There are plenty of other examples where this narrator COMPLETELY misses the actual mood of the situation. You know, talking about dealing with their family being killed, and regrets but spoken in a tone like they just won the lottery.

Complete rubbish.

...but the story was great.

Need book 3 please

The Dwarves books have been 2 of my favorite books of all time. The characters are rich in personality and the plots are exciting!

WHY CHANGE NARRATOR?

After listening to the first book I recommended it to friends and family. Now I regret it.
Mathew Wolf did an amazing job with the first in this series. So sad that the change to Neil Dickson effected the story so poorly? It was just more difficult to follow along and many times the characters voices merged.
TOO BAD they changed the story teller part way through this amazing tale.

Story: Great; Narrator: Meh

The narrator has a very pleasant voice but when he tries to do voices for the characters, all dwarves sound the same and all elf/alfar and human sound the same making it very difficult to tell who says what.

Narrator

Hard to tell if the story is good because the narrator was so bad. Could not get thru chapter 2. First book was great. Should have kept that narrator.

narrator

i love the series. ive read it all before. i have listened to many books on here. i can not get into this narrator. he makes everyone sound like they are pirates. his voice is awful. they definitely should stayed with orginal narrator.

to much political intrigue

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

it was hard to listen to due to me having to fast forward through all of the political intrigue.

What was most disappointing about Markus Heitz’s story?

over the half the book is infested with boring useless political intrigue. the first book was awesome, the second book should be rewritten with all of the political intrigue removed.

Long and political

I really love long books—sometimes I buy them sorting by length, but the political ongoing back and forth of this book makes it hard for me to buy the next. The first book was much better.

Great!

It was hard at first to get used to the new narrator but after a few chapters it was fine. I believe he tried to match the last one as best he could. The story was great. Not as good as the first one but still enjoyable. Looking forward to the next one!

Narrator not as good as the first book

I fully understand that it's difficult to depict so many different characters but at times it felt like Neil Dickson was reading the book for the first time. Some characters changed accents throughout. Also having just listened to the first book, the once Scottish dwarves now speaking with a sort of Welsh accent, took a bit of getting used to.

Superb Saga

A brilliant tale in the best tradition of fantasy. Cheesy at times but engaging and beautifully told.

Almost there

This story is better than the first of the series as it is more original. The problem is the narration. By the end of the book it had improved but the first half was the worst I've heard. Pauses while working out how to pronounce names, using the wrong voice for a character, plus the dwarves sounded like pirates. A bit more preparation was needed. Hopefully things will improve for the next book.

OK story becoming too formulaic

The story is ok. Nothing new here it's easy to follow and worth it if you like almost indestructible hero's.

If the ending isn't a large rip from the LOTR then nothing is.

Recommend for people just needing something to listen to but I'd explore other options before putting at the top of any list.

A great second book adding to a great series

After reading the first book I was hooked!! The second book does not disappoint. Its a great book, a great story and with great characters. I love the twists and turns, the depth of the characters and the humour that are all found in this fantastic series. If there was 1 little niggle and yes it is only a little niggle I don't feel the narrator in the second book is a good as the first book but it didn't stop me being completely engrossed. Can't wait to get my teeth into book three!
