For Lord Westfield’s Men, every high road leads to death.

When the deathly horrors of the Black Plague decimate the audiences in London’s theatres, the acclaimed troupe of players called Lord Westfield’s Men take to the high road to seek out fresh audiences. But wherever they go, they are thwarted by misfortune, and are baffled by mysteries. Their scripts are stolen, their players abducted. A dead man walks, and a beautiful woman hears the voice of God.

Only one man is clever enough to match swords with the troupe’s burgeoning troubles. Upon Nicholas Bracewell, the company’s book holder and mainstay, falls the burden that may cost him his life—as they head for an ancient inn called the Trip to Jerusalem, where the last act of a bloody drama is about to begin.

"Edward Marston is a master of his craft." (Daily Mail)

While I enojoyed going through this book a second time, I still found some of the characters, specifically the lead players, to be absurdly wrapped in each's own world. Three volumes of this is a bit tiresome for me. And the inclusion of Elinor seemed virtually extraneous to the plot. But I still like being in the presence of Nick Bracewell, and I did enjoy the book. But it would be a pleasant change, and more believable if Gill and Firethorn - and others - would actually learn from their experiences and not repeatedly show off old foibles.

enjoyable, but

As with all Marston's books, there is (probably) a twist at the end. Unfortunately, the audio was so garbled for the last chapter that I will never know. I will have to read it sometime...

Great story... wish I could have heard the ending

Another good mystery. You just never know what is going to happen. Tough life during this time in history just as others. Have gotten use to different narrator but all good

Good

Audible presented this book as the next in the series, so I purchased without reading the reviews. The narrator is very good but a couple chapters are ruined by a bad recording.

Do Not Purchase - Recording is Defective
