Publisher's summary

From Michael Wolff, author of the explosive, number one best seller Fire and Fury, comes the mesmerizing story behind the most bizarre melt-down in recent American political history.

The decline and fall of Rudy Giuliani, from “America’s Mayor” to public spectacle, has all the makings of a modern Shakespearean tragedy. Those who know Giuliani, whose tough leadership and even tougher politics helped revitalize New York City in the 1990s and lead the country through 9/11, have stood by and watched with incredulity as he put himself at the heart of impeachment charges against the President.

In The Tragedy of Rudy Giuliani, Michael Wolff uncovers just what happened to the iconoclastic former mayor, and reveals how his apparent self-destruction frames some of the great political questions of the age: How have evidently unstable people come to have such success in institutional politics? How have the mean and nasty achieved such heights in a system that has valued – insisted on – likeability and conventionality?

Why not expose the man?

It may seem like this book is one sided but that always occurs when the right is exposed. Whereas the reading seemed overly dramatic it also exposed a sad story of mental health detrioration.
As a result Rudy experienced seeing himself becoming obsolete while trying to be important ie a significant player. Unpleasant but not untruthful.

Ok, if you can get past the mispronunciations.

An interesting perspective on the relationship between Donald Trump and Giuliani, if you can just ignore the many name mispronunciations.

Mildly interesting...

I found this piece interesting, but not terribly illuminating. More of what I have known and expected. The mystery Giuliani who has become a parody of himself and a train wreck of a human being cannot be resolved in such a short sketch. The parts of the book that zeroed in on the relationship between Ailes and Rudy and their world view were the best.

A tragedy indeed

Great summary of the rise and fall of Rudy Giuliani. A cautionary tale for anyone chasing greed.

elucidating

Rudy as NY Southern District D.A. then Mayor of NYC. Philandering.. Had a brief stint of fame 09/11/2001. ILL never forget that hair dye running down his face. Even Trump discarded him
Trump was always discarding appointees. Folks should learn. Rudy never got paid by DJT, no one did nor does.

Alcohol, power and greed

I wanted to learn more and felt there were some significant gaps of info that would have helped bring the puzzlingly irresponsible behavior of the fallen Giuliani.

Narrator is sleepwalking

Picture the old Twilight Zone episodes. This is not a dry examination of facts, so much as a greasy slide down to the drunken pits, where lies this once great man and his grotesque cronies. Sadly, the narrator did not get this memo, and he comes off very dry. He should have passed it to someone who would enjoy weaving an Edgar-Allen-Poe type of tale. I haven't finished it yet - I plan to, even with the dry narration that doesn't quite work. I lived in NYC during 9/11 and remember Giuliani leading us through it. I was dismayed to see him emerge later with the trump gang - whaaat? I was also in NYC when trump was man-spreading in the 80's and 90's, so like New York en masse, I didn't vote for him - he's gross. I think Giuliani was drawn to the illusion of glitz and take-what-you-want type of mindset. Too bad. He took a wrong turn, that's for sure. I'll update and perhaps amend when I finish.

Rudy, Rudy, Rudy....

This book beats him up pretty bad, but its an honest story about his life. I think I would have liked this more if it dived into more detail, as it really just skimmed the surface.
