THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The must-read new book from Jonathan Karl, the author of New York Times bestsellers Tired of Winning, Betrayal, and Front Row at the Trump Show

In Retribution, Jonathan Karl’s unparalleled access brings us behind closed doors deep inside the White House and presidential campaigns, revealing the extraordinary moments that ended one man’s presidency and brought another back to power.

This is a story of unprecedented political plot twists, showing what happened behind the scenes as political fortunes fell and rose again, and as a new team coalesced around President Trump with the goal of creating an entirely new world order. From President Biden’s shocking withdrawal and Vice President Harris’s historic run, to the multiple assassination attempts on President Trump, his election, and the changes he has brought to every corner of the country, this book reveals in surprising new detail how we got here, and what we can expect from American politics in the years to come.

This was one of those audiobooks that I couldn't stop listening to 🎧. The narration was excellent and very captivating. I had learned so much more about the content of this book than I thought 🤔 I was going to. The subject is well-sourced and noted along the way. I have read several other Jonathan Karl books and this is equally well done. He is really well hooked up and gets the inside story.

My only complaint was that in the first half of the book - the actual spoken quotes were too soft to hear easily. This was remediated in the second half.

I recommend this book.

Excellent Summation of Trump 2.0

Johnathan Karl tells of his experience covering Donald Trump‘s run for office from his loss to Biden to the first months of the second term. Although “unprecedented” has been the most common word used by journalists and pundits, Karl provides new insights from his investigative reporting. His ability to identify and gain access to significant players in the developing stories was a testament to his journalistic credibility. In the audible edition, he provides snippets of interviews with Hunter Biden, Steve Bannon as well as private phone conversations with Donald Trump. Karl demonstrates the role that the press plays in American democracy.

Enlightening and Depressing

I enjoyed listening to this book particularly because you can hear the voice of President Trump in the audio. It makes the book come to life. Very well done

Truth and reconciliation is best. Felons aren’t supposed to be President. I hope those that voted for him have regrets.

Nothing new in this book… the author was scooped by at least 3 other books, particularly Whipple’s or Allen & Parnes. Plus it’s way more partisan than the others, though the author goes to great lengths to insist it isn’t. I mean, two of his most-quoted sources are Hunter Biden and Steve Bannon. And the author seemed pretty awed by the endorsement of Harris by Dick Cheney and the power behind such an endorsement, which ought to tell you how clued in he is to politics. Give me a break. Read the other books. Particularly Allen & Parnes.

This was actually a great book written from what I believe to be a member from the liberal media. It was unbiased and compelling until the postscript. The postscript was filled with what I expected the entire book to contain....a liberal bias. The author lambasted Donald Trump in that chapter with little to no content from the other side. 4 stars.

Good Book...until postscript

I really wanted to like Retribution: Donald Trump and the Campaign That Changed America by Jonathan Karl. But halfway through, I had to put it down. For a book that’s supposed to be about Trump, it spends way too much time nitpicking Joe Biden and barely mentions his accomplishments. It reads more like recycled news clips than real insight. Karl seems afraid to call Trump’s actions what they were — criminal, treasonous, and dangerous to democracy. Instead of holding Trump accountable, the book tiptoes around him. Honestly, I expected more courage and a lot more truth.

Very Disappointed

What does Hunter Biden’s drug addiction have to do with the narrative to this story? Why do I need a full chapter detailing Steve Bannon’s prison buddies? Much less, hear their calls. If you’ve read Hunter’s memoir, you can just skip a few chapters. The book feels like it’s starting out on point, but less than halfway in, the title no longer makes sense. This isn’t about “retribution;” it’s about the general, from all sides, during the 2025 presidential run. I’ve barely learned a thing from this book I didn’t already know. Just a heads up, this book isn’t what the title implies, and at times feels more sympathetic to Trump than to anyone else. The man destroying our democratic republic gets a fairly good pass is this bore of a book. Finishing it, 3/4 of the way in, feels cumbersome at best. Waste of my money.
