"I want everyone I know to read this book." --Kelly Rimmer, New York Times bestselling author of The Things We Cannot Say

For fans of The Warsaw Orphan and The Tattooist of Auschwitz. The start of WWII changed everything in Poland irrevocably--except for one man's capacity to love.

September 1, 1939: Sixty-year-old Janusz Korczak and the students and teachers at his Dom Sierot Jewish orphanage are outside enjoying a beautiful day in Warsaw. Hours later, their lives are altered forever when the Nazis invade. Suddenly treated as an outcast in his own city, Janusz--a respected leader known for his heroism and teaching--is determined to do whatever it takes to protect the children from the horrors to come.

When over four hundred thousand Jewish people are rounded up and forced to live in the 1.3-square-mile walled compound of the Warsaw ghetto, Janusz and his friends take drastic measures to shield the children from disease and starvation. With dignity and courage, the teachers and students of Dom Sierot create their own tiny army of love and bravely prepare to march toward the future--whatever it may hold.

Unforgettable, devastating, and inspired by a real-life hero of the Holocaust, The Teacher of Warsaw reminds the world that one single person can incite meaning, hope, and love.

For fans of The Goddess of Warsaw, this gripping WWII novel offers a unique perspective on the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. With its powerful storytelling and poignant characters, The Teacher of Warsaw is a perfect book club pick. Reseñas de la Crítica

'In The Teacher of Warsaw, Mario Escobar tries to recreate Korczak's complexities, which have largely been erased by his martyrdom during the Holocaust . . . The Teacher of Warsaw is a nuanced fictionalization, and it may motivate readers to learn more about the real man behind it - whose tragic circumstances left him unable to save the Jewish children in his care.'
'Mario Escobar shares the true story of Janusz Korczak, a respected leader and speaker whose life was dedicated to children . . . Escobar's account draws readers in with compelling, emotional, mind-searing descriptions while delving into human nature, evil, prejudices, and forgiveness . . . The daily lessons Teacher shares of showing love without expectations contrast with the often-contagious laughter of Henryk at unexpected moments, granting readers comfort and healing in dreadful situations.'
In The Teacher of Warsaw, Escobar's intimate, first-person delivery is flawlessly researched. Its historic timeline unfurls with heightening drama from the vantage point of one selfless man dedicated to the wellbeing of Polish children in harrowing wartime conditions against all odds and costs. It's a sobering, memorable story taking the reader through tragic events in occupied Warsaw, from September 1939 to May of 1943. An important, sensitive look at the triumph of the human spirit over evil, The Teacher of Warsaw is based on a true story and epitomizes the very best of poignant historical fiction.

Hard to put into words the effect this story has had on me! I would guess I've read at least a couple of hundred WWII books. Each was unique and gave me a different perspective of the war. Many have brought me to tears. However, this one shattered my heart and yet reminded me once again love is superior to anything evil man can do to man. Love conquers all. ❤
Narration was excellent!

This is a very well written book. What went into it had to take a lot of research. It was heartbreaking and well worth the read. Mr. Escobar’s narration was flawless. I highly recommend this book.

No matter how many novels I hear or read about the poor souls of the Holocaust, the cruelty is unimaginable.

Heartbreaking

I hold a history degree and pride myself on the work I have done with trying to study WWII. Not just the aspect of the winning side, but also the German and the oppressed. This book is well written and even thought it is a fiction. It opens many question to me that I have not yet asked.

I have to admit I struggled for a bit getting into this book but once I did I couldn’t stop listening!

Such a great book

Although it’s a work of fiction the thorough research and the talented writer make this story emotionally and historically accessible to a reader. I was completely gripped to the book. Narrator excellent.

Gripping

I liked how the story would describe the human heart caring for the orphans. Also, faith and quoting scripture..Old and New Testament. Always looking to hope.

Human desire for hope and love.

This was a moving story, giving insight into an often overlooked aspect of those affected through WW2. It follows the case of a retired pediatrician with a heart for children and the needy. The ending is sad, but performed with respect. I appreciate the author's notes on the history and timeline of the story, provided at the end.

Historically accurate

All the stories we have of the atrocities perpetrated on Jewish people of all ages seems so hard to believe … but so undeniably true. This novel was based on the life and work of a well-known doctor and teacher who established an orphanage for Jewish children in the Polish ghetto. The extermination of so many people including thousands of children makes me quite frightened of the darkness we are capable if.
