Publisher's Summary

From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

Kevin Moore, once a high-flying Virginia attorney, hits rock bottom after an inexplicably tumultuous summer leaves him disbarred and separated from his wife. Short on cash and looking for work, he lands in the middle of nowhere with a job at SUBstitution, the world's saddest sandwich shop. His closest confidants: a rambunctious rescue puppy and the 20-year-old computer whiz manning the restaurant counter beside him. He's determined to set his life right again, but the troubles keep coming. And when a bizarre, mysterious stranger wanders into the shop armed with a threatening "invitation" to join a multimillion-dollar scam, Kevin will need every bit of his legal savvy just to stay out of prison. A remarkable tour of the law's tricks and hidden trapdoors, The Substitution Order is both wise and ingenious, a wildly entertaining novel that will keep you guessing - and rooting for its tenacious hero - until the very last moment.

Edge of your seat thriller+love David Aaron Baker

I got this book because I really enjoyed David Aaron Baker's performance with Odd Thomas. As I expected, he did an amazing job!

There were times where there were issues with the recording, lines would repeat, or there would be odd pauses. Definitely issues on the side of the person who put the whole thing together, but it only had a minor impact on the enjoyability of the story.

As for the story, it was my first law thriller, and I found it both easy to follow, and well crafted with familiar terms to make it so I didn't get lost in the law jargon. I really enjoyed all the characters, and the plot itself was fantastic! It seriously had twists and turns that made me paranoid the entire way. I was scared for Lawyer Kevin at every new character addition!

What a surprise!

It's what Grisham used to be, minus the meandering prose, plus some added humor. Fantastic narration. I've added this author and narrator to my my list.

A lawyer story within a story about a lawyer

The Substitution Story is so cleverly written that some of the actions of the main characters tend to slip by upon first reading or listening to the tale. I was completely surprised at times, yet in other instances I could anticipate what would happen. Once again I was completely baffled by the intricacies of the legal process. The legal manipulation was not too hard to understand. I loved the style of writing; straightforward with very minimal flashbacks. I shall read more by the author. The narrator was good, but sometimes portrayed the main character as very placid and controlled over long stretches of time. I would have liked a little more emotion in his inflections.

Poor Poor (Brilliant!) Kevin

This book is everything you'd ever want in a fun, fast paced story that keeps you guessing. Look no further for a great summer read - or a book to enjoy anytime. The characters in this novel are so full, they almost jump off the page into life. And the plot will have you, like Kevin, scratching your head, at a loss for a solution. This is definitely one of the most enjoyable books I've encountered for a long long time.

Be patient

The story didn’t take long to get to the point with its suspense which I liked. At times, the story did seem long and drawn out, but I must say...well played.

Holy Whiplash Batman

I had read some previous reviews so I was expecting the unexpected and yet...I didn't figure it out which is always delightful. David Aaron Baker is now on my list of trusted narrators. A good read.

Very Slow

Very slow. I tried 6 chapters and had great difficulty staying awake. It seems like the point of the story was lost in unnecessary verbiage.

Perfect legal thriller

Martin Clark is funny and clever, and the plot of this book has just the right amount of complexity to listen while you enjoy the summer. I really loved the main character and as good as the story is, I just enjoyed living in the world of this down but not out attorney.
