Publisher's summary

“Susi Holliday is one of our best and most original creators of tense and twisty tales . . . Nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted in this brilliant page-turner.”—Ian Rankin

“Tense and twisty as all hell.”—Mark Billingham

“Tense, creepy and utterly brilliant…”—Jenny Blackhurst, author of The Hiking Path

“A brilliant concept, superbly executed. Susi Holliday is a master of her craft.”—Marion Todd, author of A Blind Eye

“On this street, lock your doors, whisper your secrets, and don’t trust anyone. Compulsive, clever and I couldn’t put it down.”—Louise Swanson, author of End of Story

Their neighbours welcomed them with open arms. Now they’ve vanished without a trace.

Anna and Peter desperately need to escape London for a fresh start. And they’ve found just the place: a perfect house on a perfect street in a perfect new development on the Scottish coast. But before they’ve even unpacked, they discover that the community they’ve moved into might be keeping secrets of its own…

Eager to fit in, Anna and Peter spend their first evening with their new neighbours, a couple who turn up on their doorstep to welcome them with open arms. But when Anna pops over the next morning to thank them for their hospitality, there’s no answer. The house is bare and unoccupied, and the neighbours have vanished without a trace. What’s more, everybody else on the street is convinced that no one ever lived there at all.

As she battles a growing obsession with the mystery, Anna finds herself becoming increasingly paranoid. She thought she’d escaped her own troubled past, but as the truth catches up with her, life starts to unravel. Maybe she’s not the only resident of The Street with something to hide…

Critic reviews

“Imogen Church's stylish narration builds the tension in this unusual thriller as it soon becomes apparent that no one is who they appear to be. Her strong characterizations of both male and female characters helps build a cast of larger-than-life individuals, each with their own secret and backstory. In particular, Church's neutral characterization of "The Diarist" helps keep the identity of this person hidden until it is revealed at the story's climax.”AudioFile Magazine

Enjoyed more reading it than listening

Pretty good storyline, but definitely enjoyed reading it off my Kindle rather than listening to this voice actor. Emphasis on the wrong words in sentences which totally took away from the story; dramatic pauses in weird places. Huge distraction, which took away from enjoying the story.

Funny that Way

This is a very funny novel that takes on the conventions of modern detective fiction in a lively manner.

Started out scary and intriguing

But I never liked any of the characters. If I can’t identify with someone it is hard for me to care bin beginning I actually had to listen in small doses. I kept getting scared. But the more I listened the more predictable it felt and again, I didn’t care. And there were things that just didn’t make sense.

I enjoyed the narrator but I can see how others might not have. She was over the top but added humor to the narrative and brought some of it alive.

Couldn’t finish — too much needless suspense

I like the “dysfunctional neighborhood” genre of thriller, but the balance of dramatic tension and actual plot is way off in this story. Perhaps Church’s delivery is part of the problem, speaking every suspicious thought in Anna’s mind at the same level of intensity. None of the characters seemed at all likable. Decided to give up in the end.

I loved it!

Although I guessed what was going on pretty quickly, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. I love imogen church SO MUCH. Every time she is the narrator i am mad that the book ends. And every time most reviewers hate on her. I wish I understood what they dont love about her. It would save me so much money on books.

Realistic in a lot of ways

I wasn't sure in the first hour if I would like this. Once I got into it I was hooked. I loved a couple of the female characters and how they worked things out. The ending was fantastic.

Great Book!

I've been experiencing many books in the "thriller/mystery" genre for awhile. Lately, most were "same old, same old" in feeling. This one stands out as something different enough that it caught my eye. And I was not disappointed.
Even I was surprised at the ending. It was really a great listen.

So many people say that Imogen Church is an annoying narrator. I beg to differ. The very fact that she was the narrator is what led me to this book, as I had never before read/listened to anything by the author Susi Holliday. If you love Ms. Church's narration in other productions, you will still love her in this one. If you don't like her as a narrator, then you probably won't like this one either.

This was an incredible story!!!!!

Susi Holliday has knocked it out of the park on this one! Imogen Church has outdone herself in reading this story. Her character depiction is superb and really captures the emotion and drama letting you really believe these characters are real. The Street is a great concept… on paper! This has been my favorite Audible book of 2023 so far! I look forward to seeing more from Susi and anything you can get your hands on my Imogen Church as a narrator is sure to captivate you every second of the telling!
