Hugo was a dog. He died. Now he's a kitten. As Hugo adjusts to his new body (not just a cat - a baby cat!), his new home (San Francisco), his new outside (Where are the mountains? Back in Lake Tahoe, Cassie and Jerry attempt to come to grips with life without Hugo. Cassie fills the void with "Tadpole Guard" and "Worm Patrol" and ups her protection of Jerry (her human), who is in the midst of a cataclysmic midlife crisis. In addition to his dog dying, Jerry's last two books have been monumental flops, and he's still reeling from his fiancee leaving him for another man. As if these problems aren't enough, his parents (who have become late-stage hippies) are coming to live with him for the entire summer.
And so begins the journey of three souls, intertwined by love, loss, and perhaps something even greater. Told with Nick Pirog's charm and razor sharp wit, The Speed of Souls is at once a hilarious, moving, and transcendent work of storytelling.

Best read so far
I thought this would be a book for kids - NOT. This is a book for adult dog and cat lovers. And, I could not put it down; I was completely invested to the very end. I was down right on the edge of my seat, biting nails. And speaking of nails, Nick nails it - this is why our fur babies own us - because we know we will never find a truer or more pure love. Pet Lovers-a MUST-READ!!!!
I have loved Pirog’s adventure/ mystery novels so I wasn’t sure about this one. Although I AM a crazy cat lady and an overall critter-lover. I gave it a whirl-LOVED! Even bought a copy to share with a dog mom friend of mine. Don’t hesitate. A GREAT story with a GREAT ending. Keep ‘em coming!!!

Imma Sucker for Pirog
I was introduced to Nick Pirog about a year ago through Audible just by chance. It’s been a heavy time in America for the past year-two years. And I’ve had had lots of time for reading/listening to books. Luckily Pirog has a way of making his books fun. Pure entertainment. His books lift my soul and make me laugh out loud. Just what I’ve needed. This book was different from his detective books, but no less enjoyable. Especially if you love animals and/or have ever lost a beloved pet. I have and could understand the pain and joy of this book. Highly recommended for a break from the depressing life many of us have been thrown into lately. Hope springs eternal.

A must listen for dog lovers
My husband and I enjoyed this book so much that we have actually listened to it multiple times. Would love it if Nick Pirog came out with another but can't say enough good things about this book. You will laugh out loud alot so get ready to have a few hours of true enjoyment. You can't go wrong with this one. Just pure joy!!

New reason to love Nick
This is a different direction for “normal” Nick fare but just as delightful. The description can’t come near as to just how FUNNY this book is. As a lover of all things animal including my profession, this touches my heart and funny bone. He has captured the voices, thoughts of all the characters. Add to that the perfect narration and he’s got a home run. Highly recommend this to all Nick fans PLUS all animal folks. It’s good enough for more listens and if you’re down, a MUST! Laughed so hard at “baby cat”, I startled my own.
