Story
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Publisher's Summary
Secrets can kill, and Danni Brooks knows that better than anyone.
When her husband and two of her three children perish in a devastating house fire, Danni is sure it is arson. She’s even more sure that her and her eldest daughter, Mia, were meant to die in the fire, too. But they are just a normal family. Who would want them dead?
Mia doesn’t talk. She can’t. She is locked in her own world where no one, not even her mother, can reach her.
Desperate for answers and convinced the truth might help her to reach her daughter, Danni tries to piece together the events leading up to that murderous night and uncover the arsonist. But with so many lies to untangle, what is the truth?
Prepare to have your breath taken away by an unforgettable twist that will leave you reeling.... Kirsty Ferguson is back with a heart-stopping and utterly gripping novel, perfect for all fans of B. A. Paris and Adele Parks.

Hardly a mystery or a thriller
The descriptive writing was fine and the narration was fine, it was the story that was so ridiculous. It was predictable and implausible. The question of why a woman who is betrayed by her husband and sister would murder her three children is beyond me. And some of the details are just silly, for instance, if you lose everything in a house fire, does your bank account disappear? your credit cards? What about the land the house sat upon? and the cars? and your job? all of it vanishes in the fire? Very silly and not worth 9 hours and 19 minutes.

Didn't see that coming.
When I read interesting books, somehow I am gripped to every word so there is no need to read them again. This one, however, needs to be read twice, I think. I figured it out about the fire but was convinced Mia was the one who did it. I absolutely did not see that ending coming and now I have to go back to tie it all in. You won't want to put this book down until you reach the end, that's for sure.

Both easy and hard to get through
The narrator does a good job with the characters and moving through the plot in a way that just makes the story go by. However, there are many triggers in this book (physical abuse, familial abuse, sexual assault) that there are some scenes that make you want to fast forward it’s so tough to hear. Overall, I listened to it in one day while doing yard work which was fine but I don’t think I could have listened while doing nothing else.

Not a believable story
This book is based on the idea that the police would rule a fire in which 4 people died as arson then not open an investigation into it at all. They literally are like “yup, murder. No further questions.” And as an avid true crime fan I was unable to suspend disbelief enough to enjoy it at all. Also, spoiler-
Multiple personality disorder is such a cop out story line. Not a well written book. Skip it.

No!
Sorry, I’m nearly an hour in and the way it’s written and narrated it’s jarring against the actual story and distracting me from the story.
“She repeatedly called their names, again and again “! Tautology, we’ve all done it in normal speak but it irks me when written.
“D.Warf”, that made me smile though as it was how I taught my children to spell Snow White and the seven dwarfs.
From the setting of the house at the start of the book and the accent of the narrator I imagined it was set in some remote area in Britain. But then, she lived in a caravan (British)park but she was “trailer trash” ( Americanism). They were on welfare (Americanism), but later, benefits (British). Then when one of the characters seemed to adopt an Australian accent I thought maybe all those terms are used in Australia.
The point is, I was so involved in trying to place the environment, a huge part of listening to or reading a book, that I wasn’t actually following the story so I’m afraid I’ve given up. It may have been a fantastic book if I’d been able to get beyond the distractions.

Not many books where the only person that knows the ending is the author .Clever and different even though the content of the storyline is a bit disturbing .well narrated and interpreted.Have given kirsty Ferguson 5 * as she deserves it .will read another of her books but space them out with something less disturbing.

I found every character so horrid I was not routing for anyone and some of it didn't tie up like why did the teacher end his life? I assume because Mia died? How when Danni was behaving like Joanne wasn't she recognised by people as Danni ? Almost every character was unkind. A lot of it made zero sense particularly the ending. It was just too obscure and I read thrillers

catastrophic
it started out quite interestingly with a girl's unfortunate family life and school bullies. Weaving back and forth in time it describes useless parents, sleazy boys/men, and sex obsessed, boy mad girls. It was a ridiculous concoction of thrown in sex scenes, (assuming all males were brainless, potential rapists completely ruled by their d***s) and brash and trashy characters added in an attempt to add spice. A complete car crash just thrown together. The ending was a cop out that lacked any subtlety at all.

Traumatic with no hope at end
I stuck with this onslaught of ongoing abuse in the hope that the author might reward her readers/listeners perseverance with a resolution that contained some form of hope. Instead I'm left with the fact that abuse never leaves us, it's always going to be there. Seriously....who needs to be reminded of that? I have to wonder what the point of writing this book & publishing it is. If you want to feel traumatised & hopeless this is the novel to listen to.

Sadness and misery
Narrator did a wonderful job. However their was nothing enjoyable about this book. Yes twists and turns were interesting. I only kept listening because I had already wasted so much time listening it felt like a shame to stop so near the finish. I prefer satisfying endings. They don't have to be happy but this just left me feeling empty.

A Gripping story
This was a thrilling listen, keeping you engaged throughout. The story was well told; it really drew you into the mind of the main character Danni. I highly recommend this book if you like psychological thrillers.

wish I hadn’t listened to it
I love crime, mystery, suspense but this book is just sickening. As some other readers, I don’t understand the purpose of this book. The performance was good but it’s not enough to make this book enjoyable, nothing can.

May be triggering for some
Interesting book. Can't say I really enjoyed it. I found it very uncomfortable at times, but I persisted as I wanted to know how it ended. Contains bullying, suicide, strong violence, arson, assault, stalking, strong language, explicit sexual content and the death of children.

Hard to finish
I struggled to finish this story. I skipped several chapters, a few times. I found the main character annoying. I thought the writing was simplistic, at times it sounded like a teenager's novel.
The ending was surprising, but then again I've read that scenario in several books.
I can't recommend it, I couldn't wait for it to end

Twists and Turns
A little slow from time to time and confusing but as the story takes hold and comes close to conclusion all the pieces of the puzzle start to connect.
Really enjoyable narration and story line

Compelling and hard to put down
Great story; although I predicted the end it was well written and I couldn’t stop listening to it. Narrator was expressive and made the story even better.

Surprising Ending
I thought so many times that it was so predictable and was glad when proved wrong so many times. Enjoyed the story although at times found some aspects hard to believe which made it disappointing but i found it very easy to listen to and I do recommend it. I never guessed the way things unfolded which makes story very interesting and I liked the way it took me by surprise. I will certainly see what else this author has written as I found that I liked her style. Recommend it.
