“Mine” is one of the first words babies learn, and by the time we grow up, the idea of ownership seems natural, whether we are buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you, reclining, or the squished laptop user behind you? Why is plagiarism wrong, but it’s okay to knock off a recipe or a dress design? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair in the street hold your parking space in Chicago, while in New York you lose both the space and the chair?

Throughout history, leaders have used solitude as a matter of course. Eisenhower wrote memoranda to himself during World War II as a way to think through complex problems. Martin Luther King found moral courage while sitting alone at his kitchen table one night during the Montgomery bus boycott. Jane Goodall used her intuition in the jungles of Central Africa while learning how to approach chimps. Solitude is a state of mind, a space where you can focus on your own thoughts without distraction....

Everyone has a sensitive side, but nearly one in three people have the genes to be more sensitive than others—both physically and emotionally. These are the people who pause before speaking and think before acting; they tune in to subtle details and make connections that others miss. Whether introverted or extroverted, they tend to be bighearted, creative, and wired to go deep, yet society tells them to hide the very sensitivity that makes them this way. These are the world’s “highly sensitive people,” and Sensitive is the book that champions them.

Publisher's summary
Good luck isn't just chance - it can be learned and leveraged - and The Serendipity Mindset explains how you can use serendipity to make life better at work, at home - everywhere.
Many of us believe that the great turning points and opportunities in our lives happen by chance, that they're out of our control. Often we think that successful people - and successful companies and organizations - are simply luckier than the rest of us. Good fortune - serendipity - just seems to happen to them.
Is that true? Or are some people better at creating the conditions for coincidences to arise and taking advantage of them when they do? How can we connect the dots of seemingly random events to improve our lives?
In The Serendipity Mindset, Christian Busch explains that serendipity isn't about luck in the sense of simple randomness. It's about seeing links that others don't, combining these observations in unexpected and strategic ways, and learning how to detect the moments when apparently random or unconnected ideas merge to form new opportunities. Busch explores serendipity from a rational and scientific perspective and argues that there are identifiable approaches we can use to foster the conditions to let serendipity grow.
Drawing from biology, chemistry, management, and information systems, and using examples of people from all walks of life, Busch illustrates how serendipity works and explains how we can train our own serendipity muscle and use it to turn the unexpected into opportunity. Once we understand serendipity, Busch says, we become curators of it, and luck becomes something that no longer just happens to us - it becomes a force that we can grasp, shape, and hone.
Full of exciting ideas and strategies, The Serendipity Mindset offers a clear blueprint for how we can cultivate serendipity to increase innovation, influence, and opportunity in every aspect of our lives.
Critic reviews
"In this incisive book, Christian Busch reveals that luck isn’t always dumb. People who can see what others don't - who are awake to the high probability of the improbable - can achieve and contribute in ways their more blinkered colleagues cannot. The Serendipity Mindset is a bracing and hopeful antidote to a world addicted to efficiency and control." (Daniel H. Pink, author of When and Drive)
"In The Serendipity Mindset, Christian Busch shows us that understanding how serendipity works can change the way we work and live. Drawing from both cutting-edge science and real-world examples, The Serendipity Mindset is a wise, exciting, and life-changing book." (Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post and founder and CEO, Thrive Global)
"Why is the serendipity mindset that Christian Busch describes so important? To fully leverage the discoverability and connectivity that today’s mobile networked world enables, you must hone your ability to connect the dots of chance encounters and seemingly random information in creative and productive ways. This book can help you do that. Highly recommended." (Reid Hoffman, cofounder of LinkedIn and coauthor of Blitzscaling)

Careers are not linear, predictable ladders any longer; they are fluid trajectories. No matter our age, life stage, bank account balance, or seniority, we are all being asked to navigate career changes much more frequently than in years past. The average employee tenure in America is just four to five years, and even those roles change dramatically within that time. Our economy now demands that we create businesses and careers based on creativity, growth, and impact. In this dynamic world of work, the only move that matters is your next one.

Solitude is a state of mind, a space where you can focus on your own thoughts without distraction....

We sleepwalk through life, find ourselves on well-worn paths that were never ours to walk, and become a silent extra. Extraordinary people carve their own paths as leaders and creators. They think and act with genuine independence. They stand out from the crowd because they embody their own shape and color. We call these people geniuses—as if they’re another breed. When we talk to ourselves, we often hope to tap into our inner coach but find our inner critic instead. When we’re facing a tough task, our inner coach can buoy us up: Focus - you can do this. But, just as often, our inner critic sinks us entirely: I’m going to fail. They’ll all laugh at me. What’s the use?

Value every interaction you have!
Whether it is people, places, or things, pay attention to the interaction you are having. We often say, "Things happen for a reason." The value of this statement is recognizing and remembering the situation. Who knows when that event will pop up again with an extremely valuable connection in the future?

A Relatable Exploration Of Serendipity
Dr. Busch combines refreshingly relatable anecdotes and data to string together an accessible framework for creating "luck" in your life. It's a welcome addition to a genre that likes to use extreme examples to lure you with the promise of tremendous change. The wins pointed out in the book are not absurd, and you feel inspired to make small changes that can leave a significant impact.
