Publisher's Summary
Elizabeth Gallagher has been balancing on the ragged edge for a while now. Then, a rough case on the boards of her 911-operator job collides with a family conflict at home, and Elizabeth finds herself finally coming apart at the seams. A four-state road trip - trapped in a car with her mother - is the last thing she needs.
Their destination may be beautiful Hatteras Island, but the reason for going is anything by pleasant. After one disastrous hurricane, and with a second one working its way up the coast, it’s time to convince Aunt Sandy to abandon her little seaside store on North Carolina’s Outer Banks and return to the family fold in Michigan.
But when the storm sweeps through, the three women will discover that sisterhood and the sea can change hearts, lives, and futures...often in the most unpredictable of ways.

Good story, wonderful narrator
The book was okay. I wanted more resolution at the end, but this is a more low-key, realistic novel so it didn’t really take away from the experience. I particularly enjoyed listening to the narrator. She has such a wonderful, soothing and sweet voice.

Loved this story!
This is a prequel to The Prayer Box but is easily a stand alone. Elizabeth Gallagher has had a rough year and her Mom and Aunt, who lives in the Outer Banks Of North Carolina, are locked in a battle over selling land. Elizabeth is a 911 dispatcher who is second guessing her response to a call and her kids are growing up faster than she’d like! Her marriage is not all that she hoped. All of this culminates into a trip to visit her Aunt just as a hurricane develops. Family wins as closeness and understanding grow and life finds a balance. The book is in first person, which is not always my favorite but the narrator, Sybil Johnson, does an amazing job making it work. The emotion and intonation is spot on. The characters are well done and I can feel Elizabeth’s angst as she navigates this part of her life. The book is a quick one just a few hours, but well worth the listen!

A quick beach read
Too much unrealistic drama from main character. The narrator's voice was grating and all the extra whining, crying, and other voices were detracting at best. A big disappointment after reading Where the Crawdads Sing. None of the characters were the least bit appealing and the story line was unremarkable. This would be a book you could easily put down and take a nap on the beach. Not much to keep me interested.

Couldn’t get through it.
I think this story might be good, but I couldn’t handle the “live” voice of the sobbing mother trying to talk. It detracts from the story. I found this so annoying I couldn’t continue listening.

Kind of jabbers
This was short and kind of didn’t go anywhere. It was kind of a realistic blow by blow of any old day for many of us.....slightly different stressors but expected more. Read in prep for the Prayer Box so maybe it will mean more with additional context.
