A Masterpiece of Satire on Hell’s Latest Novelties and Heaven’s Unanswerable Answer

C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the unique vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to “Our Father Below.” At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the wordly-wise devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging account of temptation—and triumph over it—ever written.

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

What a GREAT book! A MUST READ BOOK! Thanks to CS Lewis we have a great source for introspection in the book 'The Screwtape Letters'. "How often have I fallen prey to such a temptation or one quite similar?" This very question, I found myself asking very often through out the book.

I really appreciate the comments CS Lewis makes in this revision where he has added the regret that he felt unable to balance the book with the celestial counter working of 'The Enemy'. I felt confirmation in my taking time to read each letter separately and spend time in self inspection and studying The Words of 'The Enemy' and find out what The Bible says in the matter. I also felt that reading Karen Kingsbury's book 'Angels Walking' helped me to visualize how The Lord might be intervening for me as I face those things discussed by CS Lewis in 'The Screwtape Letters' with the countering heavenly forces.

Again, "What a GREAT book! A MUST READ BOOK!"

This story shows the genius of Lewis. to completely change your frame of mind to a demon to write a book is not only difficult to do but very testing of your spirit.

Through this book I received great nuggets of wisdom to understand my enemy. The narrator brought the book to life. I was taught and entertained.

C.S. Lewis does an awesome job in delving into the various ways mankind is tempted and divided.

Great Read.

Written from the point of view of a leading demon in temptation, it describes the ways CS Lewis perceived the devil temps humans away from God. It can be a little depressing to read since your entirely in the mind of an evil spirit, but reassuring. I find some of CS Lewis needs multiple readings of he same sentence to fully grasp the meaning due to the complexity. For example, I’ve read Mere Christianity a few times and still need to go back over several sentences to get the meaning. This was my first time reading or listening to the Screwtape letters, so I have ordered the hard copy version. I think that further audiobook readings will add more lucidity. CS Lewis is complex.
