Publisher's Summary

In the revised edition of his hit book The Sacred Search, author Gary Thomas helps single people of all ages make wise marital choices, in large part by rethinking what basis those choices should be made on.

Listeners are encouraged to think beyond finding their “soul mate", an idea that has its roots in the philosophy of Plato, and instead adopt a more biblical search for a “sole mate” - someone who will walk with them on their spiritual journey.

Thomas asks, What if we focused on why to get married more than on who to marry? What if being “in love” isn’t a good enough reason to get married? And most of all, what if God designed marriage to make us holy more than to make us happy?

interesting.......

I chose this book because my church recommended it to the congregation. I'm not sure I would personally recommend it. Don't really want to get into why, just feel there's too much negativity in the book, especially towards the end. Others may feel differently. That's just how I felt.

I wish I had read it before.

I’m a counselor who is very happy with my marriage… And I wish I had read this book before I got married. Gary Thomas does an excellent job of leading through biblical wisdom and practical advice in a way that frees people to make real decisions about long-term life, purpose, and satisfaction.

Thomas’s information is up-to-date, and he relies on experts in all the right places. He has good boundaries concerning the practical application of missional thinking, and pulls no punches in the area of devotion to God. At the same time, he recognizes the basic nature of many important factors like trauma, sexuality, and the way that we cover up real decisions with poor thinking. I enjoyed this book immensely!

It is definitely going on my shelf as a future resource for young men and women.

Straight to the point!

In the first part of this book, I was hesitant to "read" this in audible; it is so good I want to jot down and write on the sides of the pages or underline the necessary parts. Thank God for bookmarks and clips!

Gary has helped me understand why my marriage became broken.
It has also helped me help my kids understand how to end up with a good healthy marriage.

Highly recommend

I highly recommend this book to anyone that’s single and looking, or even those who are dating or maybe engaged. I will definitely listen to it again.

Chapter 10 is incomplete though.. so four stars overall.

Great book and narration, but missing content

I was recommended to read this book, but because of my situation in life I chose to listen to the audiobook instead. Being narrated by the author, the emphasis and inflection can be trusted to be extremely accurate to his intended meaning. However, this audiobook has one glaring issue.

There are several times where content is skipped; and it appears that data is simply missing rather than being abridged.

The one instance I can pinpoint exactly is at the end of Chapter 10. The audiobook cuts in the middle of a sentence when the author is relating a story and skips to the beginning of the next chapter. I was given the physical copy of the book and I referred to it to see how much was skipped, and it ended up totally about 5 pages on text, including an entire subsection of the chapter. There is another skip in the middle of Chapter 16, but I am not sure how much content was skipped there, because I wasn't in a situation where I could go and reference the printed book.

Overall, if you don't have the ability to read the physical copy this audiobook will be better, and if you're wanting to go through it multiple times to better retain the content then the audiobook is good as a supplementary resource, but be aware that there are multiple times where content is lost in the audiobook, and sometimes significant portions of content.

Excellent resource.

This is one of the most illuminating books that I've ever read or listened to, on the subject of marriage. It is a book that should be read/heard by anyone that is considering a Christian or non-Christian marriage.

Every Christian Single Needs This Book

I wish that I had received such rich, sound & biblically based advice years ago. This is a must read for any single who desires to enter into a lifelong, fulfilling and loving marriage with the right person for them. I will be listening to this book at least one more time to make sure that I didn't miss anything.

Best book on Christian relationships I have ever read!

A must read for all Christians whether single, courting, married or divorced! It’s by far the most balanced spiritually and practically and equally challenging book. The author has done a service to the Kingdom in writing this book and I’ll definitely be recommending it to others. God bless you Gary!
