Publisher's summary

The revenants are coming

The Deliverance is low on fuel and stranded in the middle of a war zone. Tanik Gurhain claims to have relinquished his hold on the crew, and yet they’ve all mysteriously elected him as their rightful leader, anyway. Blake is back to his skeptical self, and alarm bells are going off in Darius’s head, but with no fuel and the Eye of Thanatos blocked by increasingly tight Cygnian patrols, it hardly matters who suspects Tanik of foul play. He has a captive audience for the next phase of his plan. With the artifacts he stole from the Crucible, he’s going to test the crew for viable candidates and then train them to become Revenants.

Tanik claims that he is raising an avenging army to defeat the Cygnians and the USO once and for all, but there’s something about Tanik’s agenda that doesn’t quite ring true. Darius suspects there’s a lot he’s not telling them, and that much of what he is telling them are lies. As the truth emerges, the lines between right and wrong and friend and foe blur until everything seems gray. Darius is forced to make a horrible choice that could change the fate of the entire galaxy forever. No matter what he chooses, one thing is certain: Tanik was right - Darius really is the key to everything.

Moves Story Along One Slog After Another

The author does move the story along but in a most uninteresting way. The MC improves his skills and finds new abilities along with the listener finally having the mask of the real antagonist revealed but the various story arcs leading up to these revelations are laden with banal prose on the line of, "he opens the door and then gestures so-and-so in, he then moves across room and sits down and crosses his legs, so-and-so enters the room, he then moves to a chair opposite other so-and-so and thinks about sitting down or remaining standing, after long ruminations, he decides that he will, in fact sit. He then sits down ... blah, blah, blah".

Another example is where he introduces completely new characters, gives them bare backstory, talks about their sentient dog-like boorish alien comfort pet then introduces another character who interacts with the new character and her pet, &c. All of this takes up much listening time but, regrettably, little of which is time well-spent.

Still, I've decided to purchase the 3rd book of the trilogy in hopes of finding the completion of the story more rewarding than this book.

Another tide of emotions and one big surprise

Again another amazing book with so many twist and turns that sometimes it hard to keep up with all the storylines and many new characters. But at the same time we start to see Darius and Cassie abilities grow and Darius find true love with Tara and gets the blessing from Cass but at the same time see the abilities of Darius go into a dark place and wipe out a whole planet and kill 2 innocent revenant pilots. Then top it off we find a very deep and dark secret of one person who pretends to be one person but is not that person.
