Story
In an 18th-century England of wit, womanising and powdered wigs, provincial Philip Jettan runs the risk of irreproachability. Cleone Charteris stands in no such danger. The golden-haired, headstrong despair of men, she seeks a husband who can duel and dice with the best of them. So Philip leaves for Paris, where his father's hopes and his lover's ideals are realised, but with unforeseen consequences for them both.... A peerlessly successful and prolific romantic novelist, Georgette Heyer shows in Powder and Patch what won her a wide, devoted audience that continues to this day.

Publisher's summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
When Gervase Frant, Seventh Earl of St Erth, returns at last from Waterloo to his family seat at Stanyon, he enjoys a less than welcome homecoming. Only Theo, a cousin even quieter than himself, is there to greet him - and when he meets his stepmother and young half-brother he detects open disappointment that he survived the wars. But the dangers of the Lincolnshire countryside are quite different to those of the battlefield.
Georgette Heyer was the most successful and best-loved novelist of her day and The Quite Gentleman displays all the skills which won the hearts of her large and enduring audience.

I am beginning to really enjoy and appreciate Heyer’s more staid books. Love the gradual development of the relationship between the two main characters. Very well narrated. Sighs….

Good but not great
A pleasant Heyer but the detective story element is always, I find, a weakness. This reader is undeniably competent, but some of the audible readers of her novels are so outstanding that he suffers in comparison.

Delightful as always and well narrated even though the narrator's regional accent and mispronunciation grated on occasion. Georgette Heyer is still the Queen of Regency.

Excellent story more mystery than romance
Loved the story which is totally engaging. The usual Heyer bubbly Regency romance with characters you readily care for overlaid with attempts at murder. Even her smallest characters live and breathe on the page. The only jarring note is the accent of the reader. It is perhaps unfortunate that the story is set at Stanyon Castle as it means the reader's "Cassell" and "Laff" are repeated all too often.

Excellent narration with real feeling behind words
This is a favourite Heyer book of mine. I disliked my previous narration as there was no feelings behind the words in nearly all the key scenes.
However, after almost giving up on this one at chapter 2, ( it sounded very bland like the other one, but was actually just setting the scene). I persevered, and was so glad I did. The narrator does an excellent job and puts feeling into the exchanges between the main characters. By doing this, it becomes the love story it is intended to be .... Rather than a bland reading of words on a page and not putting them into any context. I am so pleased I can listen to this now rather than having to ignore the obvious disinterest of the previous narrator.
I would have given this a 5 for narration but for his inability to correctly pronounce 'swoon' and a couple of other words. Well worth a credit if you love GH books.

An improved recording of a firm favourite.
This is a much better version than the previous recording. The action is far removed from London and the cast of characters smaller than in many of Georgette Heyer’s novels but the elements that fans of Heyer look for are all present.

This is one of the best Georgette Heyer narrations I've heard. James MacCallum gets the voices, personalities and intonations absolutely spot on. I absolutely loved it. This wasn't one of my favourite Georgette Heyer books, until now, and I've listened to it several times already!

Excellent narration
This is an excellent narration by James MacCallum of a superb Georgette Heyer novel. MacCallum manages to give different voices to the large cast of characters - quite a difficult feat when many males of the same social standing frequently converse together. And there are are no shrill female voices - something which often mars these narrations. One of my favourite Heyers made even more enjoyable by this rendition.

The Quiet Gentleman is one of my favourite Georgette Heyer books, and it was a pleasure to hear it narrated so well. The narrator handles the different characters voices well, and the occasional regional accent complements the story rather than detracts or distracts.

Story
The Black Moth, the literary debut of the British author Georgette Heyer, is set around the 1750s. The intricate plot involves the nobility - good and bad - as they indulge in abduction, cheating at card games, duels, highway robbery, and elopement. Fortunately, repentance intervenes and all the threads come together in a happy ending.
