Publisher's Summary

From debut author Amy K. Green comes a devastating tale of psychological suspense: A teen pageant queen is found murdered in a small New England town and her sister's search for answers unearths more than she bargained for.

Days after a young pageant queen named Jenny is found murdered, her small town grieves the loss alongside her picture-perfect parents. At first glance, Jenny's tragic death appears clear-cut for investigators. The most obvious suspect is one of her fans, an older man who may have gotten too close for comfort. But Jenny's half sister, Virginia - the sarcastic black sheep of the family - isn't so sure of his guilt and takes matters into her own hands to find the killer.

But for Jenny's case and Virginia's investigation, there's more to the story. Virginia, still living in town and haunted by her own troubled teenage years, suspects that a similar darkness lies beneath the sparkling veneer of Jenny's life. Alternating between Jenny's final days and Virginia's determined search for the truth, the sisters' dual narratives follow a harrowing trail of suspects, with surprising turns that race toward a shocking finale.

Infused with dark humor and driven by two captivating young women, The Prized Girl tells a heartbreaking story of missed connections, a complicated family, and a town's disturbing secrets.

The plot unravels

Starts out promisingly. The characters seem real, the writing is good. THEN the characters start acting way out of character. Making impossibly implausible decisions. Note: plot “twists” are not entertaining when they come out of nowhere because the characters (ALL the characters) are simply behaving stupidly. The last three or four hours were excruciating to listen to.

Lots of Twists But All Unlikable Characters

The story kept my interest but I never warmed up to any of the characters and the story left me feeling unsatisfied and frustrating. I recommend this to people who like mystery dramas and those who can love ignorant, narcissistic characters. The only thing I didn't mind in the story was the narrator, she did a great job doing different voices.

Hard to follow with past and present storytelling

I did not like the way the story was told in past tense and present tense. It was a bit confusing.

The narrator's voice was annoying for Virginia's character, who was already a hard character to like or feel sorry for.

There was way too much crazy in this one. And why on earth would the author choose Virginia (Ginny) and Jenny as the sisters' names? Ugh.

And I did not like the ending. Listen to this one with a glass of wine!

good and frustrating

Really enjoyed the story and the character development. I was not happy with the main character but she was written great. Frustrating because it didnt end the way I wanted it to. Would definitely recommend!

Captivating!

This is my first foray into mystery and I truly enjoyed it. Total immersion in characters I have nothing in common with. Loved the separation of the performers. It was exciting and easy to blaze through.

Would not recommend

So many unnecessary and ridiculous plot twists I started to wonder if this was supposed to be funny.

Awful

This book was literally so awful I got 3 hours into it and couldn’t keep going. If I heard the word pedophile one more time I was going to vomit. Maybe it was the narration, I’m not sure. I think the book had potential and I believe I know where the author was trying to go with the characters. But it was too much. Too much building into the characters the narrators voice. I quit this book. Don’t buy it. Debating on getting my money / credit back.

Engaging and Hard to stop Listening!

I go through about two audio books per week and find most to be entertaining but not many keep me so engaged, I want to make time to keep listening. This book made me want to find ways to make more time to listen. I just loved the main characters, loved the twists and the narrators. This is an excellent book and an excellent author. Well done!
