The Practice of the Presence of God is a collection of writings and teachings from Brother Lawrence. Brother Lawrence - originally named Nicolas Herman - was a friar in France who worked in the 1600s.
Brother Lawrence’s teachings focused on encouraging his students to seek out the presence of God in the everyday. Through living a life of obedience, humility, and piety, Lawrence posits that humans are able to interact and live in communion with God.
This work is one of the earliest Christian texts that proclaims the value of experiencing the presence of God through living an ordinary life. Living ordinarily leaves the mind open to interacting with God’s presence, and allows people to be in constant reflection and prayer at all times. Whether “ordinary” is completing household chores, eating quiet dinners, acting gracefully in difficult circumstances, Brother Lawrence holds that practicing daily thoughtful living is how humans can commune with the divine.
Commended for its simplicity and for the earnest beliefs of the author, The Practice of the Presence of God is a great listen for Christians wanting to learn how find God in the everyday.

Brother Lawrence was a 17th century Christian who had a dramatic spiritual awakening at the age of 18. Seeing a tree in winter, his soul suddenly opened to the presence of God. Within six years he had entered a Carmelite monastery in Paris, where he worked chiefly in the kitchen, cooking and cleaning. He practiced a simple and natural method. He merely turned his attention to the Divine Presence available at all times during any activity. He reports that he was as fully present with God while washing dishes in the kitchen as he was when partaking of the sacrament in worship.

It is the art of “practicing the presence of God in one single act that does not end.” He often stated that it is God who paints Himself in the depths of our souls. The Diary is an amazing narrative that chronicles the experiences of a simple, uneducated Polish nun who received a special call shortly before the outbreak of World War II. Our Lord appeared to her and instructed her to spread the message of his Divine Mercy to all, especially in our current age, which is full of so much distress and worldliness. The message of the Divine Mercy is that God loves us all of us. And He wants us to recognize that his mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon him with trust, receive his mercy, and let it flow through us to others.

A life that deserves respect
I've read this little book at least a dozen times in my life. I am always encouraged and convicted by a holy life. This is an inspiring read!
