London, 1889. When Emma Langley discovers a mysterious symbol in her late husband's diary, she uncovers a connection to a secretive treasure-hunting group with powerful members. Her investigation takes an unexpected turn when Lord Charles Harpole, a society member, is found dying in his hotel room.

The authorities rule it suicide, but Emma and her friend Penny Green aren't convinced. As they follow a trail of cryptic clues leading from St. Paul's Cathedral to Hampton Court, they find themselves caught in a deadly game.

With suspects ranging from the lord's grieving fiancée to his ambitious brother, Emma must solve the puzzle before the killer claims another victim. But in the fog-shrouded streets of Victorian London, someone will stop at nothing to keep the society's secrets buried…

An intriguing regency period murder mystery that will keep you entranced until the very end! Kudos to both the author, for the detailed characters and descriptive language used to describe the plot and licatiobs, as well as the very talented narrator who so effortlessly brings the story alive with her gifted storytelling ability! Don't miss this one!

I loved this second installment in the historical whodunit series staring Emma Langley and Penny Blakely. Like the first book in the series, it had a layered storyline, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, and suspense. The history was woven beautifully with the intriguing murder mystery/treasure hunt making the history nerd and the secret detective in me both very happy. Emma is a young widow whose husband was deceitful and dishonest. Following his death, Emma discovered a weekly entry in her husband’s diary with an address and a strange symbol. As she and her friend Penny attempt to discover what the secret meeting is about they stumble upon a society member dying from poison. This begins a multi-pronged investigation into Lord Harpole’s death and the clues for the hidden treasure. The investigation leads Emma and Penny in surprising directions complete with dead ends, plot twists, secrets, danger, nefarious actors, and surprising revelations. There are smaller side personal story arcs and social commentary especially about women which enriches and gives greater dimension to the main plot line and the characters. I am excited to read more in this series and continue to see Emma’s growth in her strength, power and confidence.

Eilidah Beaton did a phenomenal job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.
