A totally compelling historical murder mystery

London hunts the Ripper. A widow hunts her husband's killer.

London, 1888. While Jack the Ripper's reign of terror grips the city, Emma Langley's world shatters when her husband is found murdered in Whitechapel. But grief is quickly overshadowed by a startling discovery: William Langley was not the man she thought she knew.

As panic fills London's streets, Emma delves into her husband's secret life, uncovering a web of lies that stretches from glittering society drawing rooms to the seedy gambling dens of the East End. Aided by Penny Green, a former reporter with a nose for trouble, Emma follows a trail of blackmail and corruption.

But exposing her husband's killer could make her the next victim and in the shadows of gaslit streets, a murderer waits, ready to strike again…

From the bestselling author of Penny Green comes a spellbinding new Victorian mystery series introducing Emma Langley.

I loved this first book in the historical whodunit series staring Emma Langley. It had a layered storyline, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, and suspense. This author has woven history beautifully with an intriguing murder mystery. When Emma’s husband is found murdered after abandoning her on a train, she learns how duplicitous he was. Nevertheless she is determined to find out what happened to him. Her search leads her to Penny, a former news reporter who she met three years ago. Now that she is only a wife and mother, Penny misses her investigations. Together they set out to solve William’s murder. The investigation leads Emma and Penny in surprising directions complete with dead ends, plot twists, secrets, and surprising revelations. There are smaller side personal story arcs and social commentary which enrich and give greater dimension to the main plot line and the characters. I am excited to read more in this series. 4.5 stars.

Eilidah Beaton did a phenomenal job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.

Great start to the series

A very creative, regency murder filled with lots of twists and turns taking place in Regency England. This is a fabulous book one in this new series with strong, curious, intelligent women solving a very curious murder mystery in a man's world. This is one you won't want to miss! Eagerly awaiting book two!

It was fun to be back in the world of Penny and James, but also to have a new character to cheer on. They are present throughout the book, but not the heroes of the story. I want to see Emma grow and find her happiness. I appreciate a well written mystery without gore or sex, yet is still meant for adults to enjoy. I will be buying the next one.
