Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Lisa Renee Jones brings a fresh, modern take to the thriller genre that will keep you guessing until the very end.

“The poet is a liar who always speaks the truth.” (Jean Cocteau)

Some call him friend or boss.
Some call him husband or dad.
Some call him son, even a favorite son.

But the only title that matters to him is the one the media has given him: The Poet.

A name he earned from the written words he leaves behind after he kills that are as dark and mysterious as the reason he chooses his victims.

One word, two, three, a story in a poem, a secret that only Detective Samantha Jazz can solve. Because he’s writing this story for her.

She just doesn’t know it yet.

This is a first for me...

I’ve never listened to anything by Lisa Renee Jones before but am always looking for new and talented authors. The Poet is an excellent procedural. The protagonist is a flawed female investigator while the antagonist is a deviously cunning albeit intelligent serial killer. Although the book lacks action it doesn’t disappoint in suspense. This book is impossible to predict because the antagonist’s identity isn’t revealed until almost the end of the book. You are given a clue in the prologue and through out the story we get glimpses of his point of view voiced by Scott Brick. Unfortunately not enough for me. Scott Brick is one of my favorite narrators and his part in this book is actually quite small. Brittany Presley does the bulk of the narrating she too does an excellent job.
So, if you’re up for a really good HIGHLY RECOMMENDED suspense/thriller then this book is certainly worth your time and credit!

Next time start the vulgarity sooner...

don't let the readers go several chapters before the you dummy up your characters by using the most profane language. The story was good, as was the performance, but the descent into ignorant, debasing language was so disappointing. I should have stopped sooner but I thought maybe the first occurrence was a one-off, just to get a rating, if there is any, above children's books they way PG-13 movies would do. The movies would use the most vile word in English to save them from a PG rating, which, by today's standards (or more accurately, lack thereof) is apparently a kiss of death.

Things settled down and went well until the floodgates of profanity opened. And what, to me, is even worse, is that the way it is used seems so odd and out of place.

What a shame "educated" people, Authors for one, contribute to the decline of decency rather than bolster it. Do you need the money or fame so much you have to jump into the cesspool of humanity? These are my personal thoughts that, no doubt, will raise the ire of probably any who read this.

Great story and narration..

What a great book. You had no idea who the killer was until very near the end. I loved Detective/Agent Samantha Jazz, her partner Ethan Langford and her boyfriend, Agent Wade Miller. They were quite the trio as they chased the serial killer.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 24 times.

As for the narration: The real reason I got this book was because Scott Brick and Brittany Pressley were narrating it: two of my very favorite narrators. BUT, BUT, BUT, I just hated it because Scott Brick did the voice of the serial killer. SB narrated the 6 books of the Orphan X series and I absolutely loved every one of them, so it was kinda' hard listening to him as an insane killer. But he was still awesome, right along with BP.

Boring

NO SPOILERS! I listened for three hours and gave up. I got this one because I love Scott Brick but unfortunately he was only on for maybe 10 minutes of the those first three hours. Maybe there is more of him later but instead I had to listen to the female narrator, Brittany Pressley who just sounds wrong for the part. She just has the wrong voice for a police detective, what else can I say.

Great mystery, though it runs quite slow.

Poetry isn't my strong point. Still, great mystery and narrations. Brittany and Scott are perfect together. 9/10. Rather slow paced, but, that's just me.

One of the best books I've listened to this year!

I'm floored that this was offered in the plus catalog. I enjoyed every minute. What a great storyline and interesting characters. It didn't hurt that Scott Brick and Brittany Pressley narrated...two of my favorites! Give it a listen. You won't be disappointed.

Had potential but . . .

POORLY executed. Super weird romantic dynamic that was unnecessary and never fully committed to. Nothing happened until the last 18 minutes. Super lame protagonist. The idea was there, the writing was sub par at best.

Excellent intro to new detective

This book was a fun read and the new heroine is totally likable, intelligent and flawed with a funny partner. Looking forward to book 2

By numbers

Pedestrian story, flat characters, nothing to be done but see it through. I kept in hoping for a change that would make the time I invested pay off but while not a bad book it was one of a thousand like it

Couldn’t finish it

Personal opinion only. Others might enjoy this book but I couldn’t listen to it! The female protagonist just grated on me.

Hard work

The story itself is ok, but the narration was hard to listen to. I did not enjoy this listening experience.
