Story
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Story
Among the autobiographies of great military figures, Ulysses S. Grant’s is certainly one of the finest, and it is arguably the most notable literary achievement of any American president: a lucid, compelling, and brutally honest chronicle of triumph and failure. From his frontier boyhood, to his heroics in battle, to the grinding poverty from which the Civil War ironically rescued him, these memoirs are a mesmerizing, deeply moving account of a brilliant man told with great courage.

Story
In the darkest days of the American Revolution, Francis Marion and his band of militia freedom fighters kept hope alive for the patriot cause during the critical British southern campaign. Like the Robin Hood of legend, Marion and his men attacked from secret hideaways before melting back into the forest or swamp. Employing insurgent tactics that became commonplace in later centuries, Marion and his brigade inflicted losses on the enemy that were individually small but cumulatively a large drain on British resources and morale.

General Stonewall Jackson was like no one anyone had ever seen. In April of 1862 he was merely another Confederate general with only a single battle credential in an army fighting in what seemed to be a losing cause. By middle June he had engineered perhaps the greatest military campaign in American history and was one of the most famous men in the Western World. He had given the Confederate cause what it had recently lacked: hope.

James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Who was Kim Philby? Those closest to him—like his fellow MI6 officer and best friend since childhood, Nicholas Elliot, and the CIA’s head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton—knew him as a loyal confidant and an unshakeable patriot. Philby was a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union. Editorial reviews
Former president Ulysses S. Grant fell on hard times in his dying days - his family’s fortunes decimated by Ponzi scheme investments - and the general’s last hope was that these memoirs might provide a small inheritance for his surviving wife and children. More than that, Grant’s memoirs remain among the most unique and insightful histories of 19th-century U.S. military campaigns, drawing on the author’s experiences in the Civil War and Mexican-American War. Fluid performer Peter Johnson captures the honest forthrightness and concise clarity that define Grant’s work in stark contrast to other Victorian military histories. Listeners are treated to Grant’s account of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, and his surprising indictment of American motives in the country’s war against Mexico.

In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

In weeks after the September 11 attacks, 18-year-old Mansoor Adayfi was kidnapped by Afghan militia and sold to US forces for bounty money. After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor", a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

In this opening volume, Grant covers his early years, including his time at the U.S. military academy at West Point and his service during the Mexican War under Zachary Taylor.

In a review of his life as a private citizen, as well as a general, Grant lets the listener know what a heroic figure he really was. Like so many men before him, Grant describes being pressured into a certain way of life by his father. He never aspired for a military career, but his father insisted on West Point Academy for his schooling.

Story
At daybreak on April 6, 1862, Confederate forces launched a bold suprise attack on the Union army, encamped in southwestern Tennesse. The battle of Shiloh, also known as the battle of Pittsburg Landing, would prove to be the bloodiest battle up until that point in United Staes history. The two day battle would cost a staggering 23,000 casualties. Both sides were stunned at the appalling loss of life. At the time, neither realized that three more years of such bloodshed were still to come.

Not just for history buffs
It was interesting to hear the life story of Ulysses S Grant in his own words. The narrator does a great job of bring the President's words to life. There are some minor references to violence, of course, and some period-expected racially awkward language. Therefore this might not be appropriate for very young children. However, I highly recommend this book for older children, teens, and adults.

Get inside Grant's head as the War concluded.
Not unlike the personal memoirs of many generals and admirals throughout history, Grant's memoirs from the War Years (Parts 2 and 3) recall his thoughts at the time, whether before, during or after the many famous battles of the Civil War, including the dramatic conclusion at Appomattox. Viewed through his eyes and personally written by him in his last months of life, it has a fantastic level of detail and insight and is a valuable addition to the substantial literature on this true American hero. Derided as a drunk and a failure in business and politics by some, he was in fact Lincoln's and the Union's last hope for ultimate victory and his integrity and humanity never failed. His leadership and strategy in creating that victory speak for themselves about this humble and courageous military genius.

Excellent Reading of One of the Most Important Books in US History
Peter Johnson’s Reading of The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant is second to none. Truthfully, my only complaints are that it was divided into three parts, each requiring a separate purchase when it could easily have been condensed to a single work (even the original printed book was published in only two volumes) and that the recording is divided into “chapters” (more correctly “tracks”) based apparently on length, as they do not correspond at all to the actual chapters as Grant wrote them. Otherwise, it is thoroughly enjoyable.

Underrated military commander, president , writer
I've long wanted to read U..S. Grant's military memoirs . Brilliantly written by a man dying of cancer... A humble man who came from obscurity to lead his army to victory and become president in a few short years. Narration was well done.. My understanding and admiration of U.S. Grant , the man, already great, have been greatly increased by this top-notch presentation. 5 stars+

Wonderful
given the current state of our country The clash of cultures in many other unfortunate things that we are still struggling with this memoir by Ulysses s Grant is perfect. is inspiring it is educational it is concise and well-written. considering that he was riding this at the very very end of his life the way in which he writes the stories that he tells about such a time of formation in our country's existence is simply important. and that importance cannot be overstated
