Story
Benjamin Franklin is the founding father who winks at us - an ambitious urban entrepreneur who rose up the social ladder, from leather-aproned shopkeeper to dining with kings. In best-selling author Walter Isaacson's vivid and witty full-scale biography, we discover why Franklin turns to us from history's stage with eyes that twinkle from behind his new-fangled spectacles. In Benjamin Franklin, Isaacson shows how Franklin defines both his own time and ours. The most interesting thing that Franklin invented, and continually reinvented, was himself.

The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass was Douglass' third autobiography. In it he was able to go into greater detail about his life as a slave and his escape from slavery, as he and his family were no longer in any danger from the reception of his work. In this engrossing narrative he recounts early years of abuse; his dramatic escape to the North and eventual freedom, abolitionist campaigns, and his crusade for full civil rights for former slaves.

Poor Richard's Almanack contained the calendar, astronomical and astrological information, poems, and sayings. In the spaces that occurred between noted calendar days, Franklin included proverbial sentences about industry and frugality. It is mainly remembered, however, for being a repository of Franklin's aphorisms and proverbs, many of which live on in American English.

Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller’s exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book indelibly alters our image of this most enigmatic capitalist. Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world’s richest man by creating America’s most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.

Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power gives us Jefferson the politician and president, a great and complex human being forever engaged in the wars of his era. Philosophers think; politicians maneuver. Jefferson’s genius was that he was both and could do both, often simultaneously. Such is the art of power.

Among the autobiographies of great military figures, Ulysses S. Egregious omission of important passage.
I was appalled by the glaring omission of the single most character-revealing sentence in this classic work. Had the narrator chosen to read the text as it appears in every legitimate print edition, the following sentence would have been heard in Chapter 8 of this audio book. "In the mean time, that hard-to-be-governed passion of youth had hurried me frequently into intrigues with low women that fell in my way, which were attended with some expense and great inconvenience, besides a continual risk to my health by a distemper, which of all things I dreaded, though by great good luck I escaped it."
Historians and biographers have discussed Franklin's sexual exploits at length in other works. Here, in his own words, Franklin voluntarily shines a light on this aspect of his character. I cannot imagine why any editor or narrator would choose to omit this passage from an audio version that purports to be an accurate portrayal of the original written work. It seems as if they want to turn the book into a children's story in which Franklin is portrayed as a choir boy.
To the modern reader/listener, parts of Franklin's autobiography are dull and boring at best. To edit out one of the most interesting and informative parts in an effort to sanitize it is totally irresponsible.

Probably Not What You're Expecting
I was interested in reading a book about Benjamin Franklin's life and contributions. I chose the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin because the Walter Isaacson biography is an absolute whopper - 24 hours, 45 minutes in audio. The autobiography is only 6 hours, 35 minutes.
The problem is that, counter to my expectation, Franklin barely did speak about some of his greatest feats. Turns out he died without having finished the autobiography, leaving some of the most significant parts of his life unwritten - such as his role in the founding of the United States of America. Instead, the book's focus is mostly spent on Franklin's formative years and experiences.
If you are looking for insight into the self-perceived development of Benjamin Franklin - how he grew into the person he became - you will gain a good deal from this book.
If you are looking for a historical account of Benjamin Franklin's life and contributions - as I was - then this book likely won't satisfy.

Ben Franklin, in his own words
This book was a very quick read (listen). I actually listened to it, as a supplement after reading Walter Isaacson‘s biography of Franklin.
Isaacson suggests that many influential people have cited Franklin’s autobiography as having changed their lives. He further notes that Dale Carnegie and Scott Covey base many of their self-help “principles” on those attributed to Franklin and “Poor Richard.” Indeed that comes through quite clearly in this book.
If you are looking for a comprehensive history of Ben Franklin‘s life I would start with Isaacson‘s book, as I did. However, I wouldn’t skip this autobiography as it provides an interesting perspective once you know the greater historical context.

Amazing
It is absolutely amazing that this was one of our founding fathers. This powerful and unbelievably smart man shaped the course of the entire United States of America. He was constantly trying to better himself for the sake of the people around him. He recognized that he had faults and would try to continually transform them. Whenever I watched historical shows about Benjamin Franklin they never showed him so personable. I'm looking forward to reading many more books about our founding fathers. Would give 4.5/5 if possible
Very intriguing to hear of this remarkable man’s life in his own words, and not the account of a modern day historian. This authenticity makes you feel as though you have travelled back in time, and the incredible narration by Qarie Marshall compliments this wonderfully.
There really are a few gems in this book that very much still hold true to this day. Franklin’s approach to conversing with strangers, and his views on religion stand out to me in particular. If modern day society could adapt and implement such tenets today, then I have good reason to believe the world would truly be a far better place as a whole.
Whilst deeply interesting and informative, the book is, at times, a bit boring and/or hard to follow. This is absolutely to be expected due to differences in language, and the period in which such events occurred, but it does - unfortunately - hinder the listening/reading experience ever so slightly.
That aside, I still thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, and would have no trouble recommending it to pretty much anyone.

A decently interesting story
I was really interested to know more about B Franklin which I first got a glimpse about from the 18 most productive people in history so I got hold of his Autobiography which is my 1st. There was some uninteresting parts throughout though there was a fair amount I did like.
It was interesting to listen to the wording of that era by the man himself though some of the details he recorded weren't interesting to me. This one didn't have any of the rave reviews like the biography but, still wanted to hear it in what tongue was used of that time and some parts I was very engaged in and even repeated some parts just to grasp it better.
I like the narrator especially how different voices were sparingly used to separate from B. Franklin.
Overall I enjoyed the listen.
