When Fiona Lawson comes home to find strangers moving into her house, she's sure there's been a mistake. She and her estranged husband, Bram, have a modern coparenting arrangement: bird's nest custody, where each parent spends a few nights a week with their two sons at the prized family home to maintain stability for their children. Story
Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half brother, Ben, didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up—to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this?—he’s not there. The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Story
I never thought I would end up here. Alone, in a cold one-bedroom apartment, only seeing my precious daughter once a week. Another woman is living the life that was once mine. I wish I was still married to my ex-husband, the love of my life. I dream of tucking my five-year-old child into her ballerina bed sheets every night. I miss living in a beautiful house, the perfect family home, with a winding staircase and a sprawling garden. I’d do anything to be with my family again. To start over and prove to them that I’ve changed, that I won’t lose control like before.

I thought my sister was happy. I thought what we all thought: that Annie and Dom led perfect lives in a lovely cottage in a quiet village by the sea, with flowers at the front gate and an apple tree in the garden. Everyone knew them: generous, loving Dom, creative, joyful Annie. But I never saw Annie as she sat waiting for Dom well into the night. I didn’t see her smiling through her tears. I didn’t know what the perfect couple was hiding.

Publisher's Summary
One of CrimeReads’ Most Anticipated Crime Books of 2021
Longlisted for the Theakston Old Peculier 2021 Crime Novel of the Year
The “queen of the sucker-punch twist” (Ruth Ware, number-one New York Times best-selling author) and author of Our House weaves an unputdownable pause-resister about a commuter who becomes a suspect in his friend’s mysterious disappearance.
It all happens so quickly. One day you’re living the dream, commuting to work by ferry with your charismatic neighbor Kit in the seat beside you. The next, Kit hasn’t turned up for the boat and his wife, Melia, has reported him missing.
When you get off at your stop, the police are waiting. Another passenger saw you and Kit arguing on the boat home the night before and the police say that you had a reason to want him dead. You protest. You and Kit are friends - ask Melia, she’ll vouch for you. And who exactly is this other passenger pointing the finger? What do they know about your lives?
No, whatever danger followed you home last night, you are innocent, totally innocent.
Aren’t you?
Critic Reviews
"Mackintosh keeps Jamie believably innocent. His portrayals of women are intelligent and believable. When things heat up, you can almost hear Jamie's heart pounding in Mackintosh's voice. Candlish brings extraordinary psychological insights into play, and Mackintosh delivers the emotions." (AudioFile Magazine)

Your one sentence reviews show up in the first line. Thanks for ruining a much anticipated pre-order for us just because you hated it.
On the other hand I liked it, and am grateful for this audio-book, it made my flight less boring. And we all know how important that is when flying in the US, among such considerate classy and sophisticated people we have living in this country. Especially people who *don’t ruin the book for you. I enjoyed the the narration and the suspenseful story line. I am sure you will too if you give it an honest listen.

pretty good read. I'd recommend it but its another really bad audio. every 19 seconds all you hear is smacking lips and swallowing. it was pretty bad to have to listen to for 10 hours. but I was into the book so I finished. you've been warned.

Boring story and narration
It took everything in me to finish this audiobook. This story spent way too much time on boring character drama than developing suspense or intrigue. The ending was very anticlimactic and I have to up the narration speed drastically just to get it to a decent pace. Don’t waste your credit.

Unoriginal and tedious
l think I have read or listened to this book's plot before, from other authors who wrote it first and wrote it better. There wasn't really anything new or compelling in this novel, except maybe the use of a water bus as the form of public transportation? The author harped on and on about the water bus, and it was really annoying.
None of the interpersonal relationships were well developed or believable.
There were also quite a few moments of gross mouth noises from the narrator, which only managed to irritate me more.
This book was not entertaining and it will be easily forgotten.

Absolutely excellent
This was my third book by this author. I think others might have received more acclaim, but I thought this was by far the best. Excellent plot (you might see some of the twists coming, but not all of them). Excellent characters (some exquisitely despicable). Very entertaining. Plus, flawless performances! Great job. Thank you!

Mouth sounds very distracting to a suspenseful story
The reviewers that were not bothered by the swallowing and various mouth sounds, I have to believe they were listening without noise cancelling headphones or in the car. The sounds to be blunt were gross. I could literally hear his saliva crackling. He sounded as if he had serious dry mouth. It was extremely distracting. I can’t believe production let this slide. 10 hours of it, and I promise it never lets up. His voices for characters are fine, but my goodness I have never had a worse experience listening, it really was that bad.
I recommend reading this one yourself because the story is very suspenseful and twisty. It just goes to show how a fantastic narrator can make a good book great and a poorly produced and executed narration can make a good book just ‘ok’. They really should go in an fix this as best as they can. YUCK!

Great Book! 9.0/10
This book was fantastic!! The only thing I felt was lacking was the character development not with the main characters but the supporting characters. I thought the storyline was unique and not something I have heard before or could have guessed after reading almost exclusively thrillers and mysteries. I really really enjoyed this book!!
