Terrible book but good narration..

DNF at 64% (page 208 of 326) (3 hours and 30 minutes left of the audio)

Okay, Chase was kind of lame from the very beginning, but I kept going, hoping the book would get better. It didn’t! He saw a sniper on a water tower, and it was a woman and he fell in love and didn’t tell anyone that he’d gotten a good look at her. Now, this guy was a newly trained assassin and thought it was a good idea to lie to his handler, hoping that someday he’d meet this chick? Of course, he did meet her, the night she broke into his yacht and nearly cut his tongue in half while questioning him. (And of course, they were kissing the next day.) Who are you kidding? Dutch, his handler got there in time and after chasing Anya off he proceeded to sew up Chase’s tongue. Really?

This book could have been much better if the author would have left the silly romance out. Don’t get me wrong I read a lot of romances but that much romance doesn’t belong in a book about assassins.
And, since his love-interest is in the next book too I won’t give that one a try, hoping it would have better than this one.

No actual sex and the F-bomb was used 9 times.

As to the narration: Kyle Tait did a great job on the voices and emotions but even he couldn’t help the poor story-line.

Can’t wait for book two!

This was a tremendous start to a new series. Cap Daniels brings such realism and life to his characters, and the narration was a perfect match for how Chase sounded in my head. Really looking forward to the next installment! Highly recommended listen.

I was provided a review code by the publisher in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Narrator was fantastic <br />

Narrator was great. The first part of the book was good but I didn't realize it was more of a love story than an action book.

More please!

OMGosh, this book, even in its predictability, was awesome!!!!! I loved every single minute of it.

The opening sequence is so well-written and completely immersive into character psyche that when it shifted gears, I just knew I was in for a great ride. Loved it, loved it, loved it!!

Spies and covert operations and assassins and espionage were front and center. The storyline was not overly complex and it kept my attention until the very satisfying (for some) ending.

The narration was fun. Tait voiced Chase, a strapping twentysomething male, and Anya, a Russian SVR agent with very distinct voices and characteristics. There were a series of additional Russian bad guys and Tait's Russian was flawless!!!!!

I've already downloaded the next book in the series!

Just Right!

The character development is superb - no wondering who, why, or how.
The plot is believable, the narration is perfection, and the characters are enjoyable, interesting as well as their motivations being believable This is a straight-up, well-written, well performed action story. The main character has the right balance of accomplished talents and humility.
I'm ordering the next installment of the series!

An amazing story

The author and narrator of this book come together perfectly to create an action-packed suspension story. I love Brad Thor books and I've been trying to find similar storylines to get addicted to, and I'm glad I found this series. The author provides great attention to detail so that the reader feels like they are involved in every job Chase is doing. I strongly recommend.

Espionage

Thrilling story of Chase who is severely injured in a baseball game and finds his whole life changed by his injuries. The story is fast paced with plenty of action, spy drama and romance (although predicable).
The narration was excellent.
Looking forward to hearing his other books in the series

Secrets and lies as a covert agent

When you are a covert operative for the government living your life on the edge and trusting no one is all in a normal day for Chase Fulton but when he spies another assassin tampering with a horse race his world and life as he knows it is turned upside down. This book is exciting and the narrator of this audio really suits the pace and feel of the story. This is an exciting start to this series of books and I can’t wait for book two.

An interesting start.

Chase is so naive, and arrogant as just a young man can be. For someone trained as an assassin he takes a lot at face value.

That Yankee Doodle Dandy s**t we take for granted.

After winning the College World Series for his team, but, in the process, losing the future baseball career for himself, Chase Fulton concentrates hard on his psychology studies, growing close to his professor, Dr.Richtor. Instead of attending his graduation, however, the professor surprises Chase by flying him to an island to meet several of Richter's old pals and offer him the chance to join the ranks of secret assassins, risking everything to serve his country - and make a !of of money. Of course, he says yes.

Written in the first person from Chase's perspective, the introductory chapter on how he acquires his future-destroying injury during the final minutes of a baseball game is riveting and superb, even for a Brit like myself who has no knowledge of, nor interest in, the game. It drew me in completely. This book moves swiftly from one action packed scenario to another, only quickly drawing breath for 'the grand romance', a love at first sight, from a distance, type of affair. And, thereafter, multitudinous coincidences make this story completely unlikely: a real case of suspending disbelief required, especially since this all American, intellectually clever college graduate seems to be such a self destructive simpleton geek. And yet the book was strangely compelling. Narration by Kyle Tait was excellent, read with understanding and expression, and giving individual voice to all of the characters as well as becoming a very believable Chase Fulton. A good performance.

The start of the career of a new James Bond? Perhaps, if he survives for long enough. But at this point in his career, Chase Fulton is far too easily fooled, nowhere near suave enough and his whole private life is riddled with coincidences and unlikely decisions. He has the money, though - eight million dollars for his first job: not a bad return. My thanks to the rights holder of The Opening Chase, who, at my request via Audiobook Boom, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. Despite my constant inner protests, I very much enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next: The Broken Chase. Recommended to all who enjoy fast moving thrillers of the lone assassin kind.
