Publisher's Summary

When the body of a French woman washes up on a wild inlet off the Cornish coast, Brian Macalvie, the divisional commander with the Devon-Cornwall police, is called in. Who could have killed this beautiful tourist when the only visible footprints nearby belong to the two little girls who found her?

While Macalvie stands stumped in the Scilly Islands, inspector Richard Jury - 20 miles away on Land’s End - is at the Old Success pub, sharing a drink with the legendary former CID detective Tom Brownell, a man renowned for solving every case he undertook - well, nearly every case. Bronwell discloses that there was one he once missed. In the days following the mysterious slaying of the Parisian tourist, two other murders are called in to Macalvie and Jury's teams: first, a man is found dead in his Devon estate, then a holy duster turns up murdered at the Exeter Cathedral in Northamptonshire.

When Macalvie and Jury decide to consult Bronwell, the retired detective tells them that the three murders, although very different in execution, are connected. As the trio sets out to solve this puzzle, Jury and Macalvie hope that this doesn’t turn out to be Brownell’s second-ever miss.

Definitely not her best

I have read or listened to all the Richard Jury mysteries. Somehow, Grimes missed the mark on this one. The "crime" kept changing and wasn't very intriguing. The characters weren't very well developed so I kept trying to remember who each was. The location could have been a nice part of the plot but wasn't.
I kept falling asleep while listening...a sure sign that there were some things that could have been done better.
Steve West, the narrator was excellent as always.

long-time fan, now disappointed

I can't say I have really enjoyed this title, nor the last several. There's been a change in the writing and the narration, even though it is the same narrator. .New publisher? New producer/director? I only know if this had been my first Richard Jury foray, I probably would not read/listen to more.

A great mystery with the usual cast

Grimes brings all of the characters back and adds some great new ones. Grimes is still writing hits.

Mini mystery

Short and a bit disjointed—not among her best. Too many plot lines to be fully developed in the space allotted.

Maybe I anticipated too much?

Maybe I’ve been anticipating this book for so long I was setting myself up for disappointment.

Steve West’s narration is perfect as I’ve come to expect. I loved the narration and all the characters he does so well. They feel like old friends by now. But the story was very disjointed. I found myself going back several times to see if I’d missed a chapter or two or wondering if the entire book was loaded properly. That’s very unMarthalike.

Whaaaaat?

Agree with other reviewers that this story was very hard to follow. Reached Chapter 13 and realized I was lost, so rewound to the beginning and began again. Then completely lost the thread about mid-book. Finished it anyway just for the pleasure of the conversations, that are for me, the best part of these novels.

Don’t bother, there are better things to do in a day than listen to this

Overly complex with too many unbelievable characters to whom I didn’t warm, and a plot line that ended in a motive that was extremely weak. Waste of a good credit.
