Great journey until the end.

There's a problematic non-character with "schizophrenia" who commits murder. This is a trope that needs to die. People with schizophrenia are more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators, and stigma like this is why.

Most of this book is very enjoyable, and had the adventure/journey feeling that I love in a story. The in-universe lore of "word magic" was fun, but felt a little bit lost in translation. The youth detention center is very similar to many of the group homes where I spent my teen years. I loved the character of Fatso/Jack, and the way he responded to people who attempted to dull his shine.

The weak point is the ending. It's got that obnoxious bookend of "none of this actually happened," because it was actually a story within a story, but then the ending kept going and going and ... I turned it off with almost an hour to go.

If you stop around chapter 23 or 24 (I think), this is actually a great book! The author got lost after that.

Very engaging

After a slow start I couldn’t put it down. It held my interest to the end.

Too many reviewers are using an adult perspective

This is a YA book! It’s not Harry Hole, its a young adult book. It’s okay for an author to expand their audience. Harry Potter isn’t Strike. I will continue to purchase any Nesbo novel, but hopefully review it from the perspective for whom it was written.

It's not Hole. It's YA

The language and style lack the edgy grit of the Harry Hole series. This story seems obviously written for a younger audience. I set aside my Hole expectation and, with that in mind, enjoyed the story. The opening horror scene seemed a little ridiculous to me, but it all came together in the end in an unexpected and pleasing way. The story seemed to finish with two hours left to go. But Jo Nesbo then did what I like most about his writing, he began peeling back layers of revelation with unexpected twists that kept me intrigued until the end. I thoroughly enjoyed the narrator, who did not resort to theatrics to carry a scene. His straightforward approach added the creepy atmosphere that I enjoy the most when it comes to horror.

not what I was expecting

but I loved it. Very different from the other Job Nesbo books. Reminded me alot of Steven King books.. not the horror but more like the dark imagination. I enjoyed it. I liked the narrator too

Not my cup of tea

Story was not what I expected. Have read most of his prior books and this story falls short I like a good scary book and this was not one. Ending for me was flat

Different and I loved it

This book is as if Stephen King wrote a story with Richard Papen of The Secret History as the lead. It requires focus but it’s brilliant and I could not stop listening. It

Might be ok for Tween readers, but I was very disappointed. Did not even finish it.

I have purchased and read every single one of Joe Nesbo’s Books, so I was excited to see that he had written another one. I did not realize it was.YA, but I have enjoyed a lot of literature aimed at younger audiences, such as Harry Potter, etc.
However, I have to say that, even though the writing is good, as always, the plot was dismal, I don’t know if he even has an editor anymore because they were huge gaps in plot that just made no sense it was like he was just writing scary things happening, but they didn’t make any sense as a whole picture. It really felt like a lazy book, written just to keep publishing some thing. I have to admit, I’m very disappointed, and I couldn’t even get a refund because audible wouldn’t allow it for some reason.

I did not enjoy this at all

I’m a Jo Nesbo fan normally, but this book is easily his worst effort. At no point, did I find myself enjoying any of it. I was only able to endure listening to it, because I have enjoyed his other books so much. I kept thinking, that this book was going to get better. Sadly, it only got worse.
