Publisher's summary

Almost a decade ago, the first Bottoming Book taught tens of thousands of people that bottoming - being a submissive, masochist, slave, "boy" or "girl", or other BDSM recipient - is as much an art as topping. Since then, the growing popularity of BDSM, and the blossoming of the Internet as a source of information and connection, have created a whole new universe of possibilities for players. Now, the completely updated revised New Bottoming Book gives even more insights and ideas, updated for a new millennium, about how to be a successful, popular bottom! New sections on dominance/submission play, bridging the gap from on-line to real-time relationships, the four stages of a scene, and more. Plus, Fish's hot illustrations of bottoms in action, many moving and funny anecdotes, and an extra-large helping of the realistic wisdom for which these authors are known.

Much better than I expected!

I've read a lot of books on BDSM and expected another manual. I was not expecting how loving, moving and spiritual this book is. It took me deeper into the reason we're Tops and bottoms and shone a light on the pleasure and benefits.

A must read if you're exploring outside of the traditional world.

Religious Trojan horse

There is some good technical knowledge, but I strongly suggest you read the last chapter first.

The final chapter explains the religious motivations and boundary problems that color every other chapter in the book. Sure, BDSM can be wonderful and transcendent, but the vast majority of us do not worship at a creepy orgy circle.

I’m deeply embarrassed that this is one of the frequently recommended introductory texts.

Required Reading

I'm really really glad that I read this book. I think it's smart, savvy, and should be required reading for subs in the BDSM community. I learned so much from this.
A previous review warned of strange religious beliefs expressed in the final chapter of the book. It's true, new spiritual, neopagan leaning beliefs are outlined there but not at all imposingly. These beliefs or ones like them are I think widely shared by people who are comfortable enough going outside of mainstream norms, such as readers of BDSM manuals. And these beliefs I think resonate with and indeed draw upon many long-standing belief systems. I found it compelling and interesting. If you've thought about kundalini energy, the chakras, or your connection to an earth-based world spirit, these beliefs might resonate with you.

Informative

I loved this book. It was so easy to listen to and follow. I felt that it covered a variety of topics and gave at least a broad definition. I liked that certain topics were introduced in this book but that the author informed you more research should be done because it was an intense or dangerous topic. The best part of this book though was that it expressed that trust, respect, and communication are the base of a healthy D/s relationship.

Fantastic narrator reading!

If you could sum up The New Bottoming Book in three words, what would they be?

Basic intro to bottoming, with some fun flair.

What did you like best about this story?

Definitely Dossie's narration style. I am an avid Audible listener and often select books by narrator. She was fun and has a great reading voice!

Any additional comments?

I find it very useful to have chapters built into the recording. This book doesn't have chapter markers, so it often couldn't find my place the next time I listened.

Fantastic

The authors state that this isn't a book for novices but, aside from terms (which are well defined), it was quite accessible. I found it particularly affirming that the authors spoke from their own knowledge and so accurately and so beautifully acknowledged the inherent power in and strength needed to be a successful bottom. Highly recommended.

Janet and Dossie are the BEST

Must Listen!

If you're new to kink, BDSM and polyamory, you need these wise and experienced women to open doors you never knew existed. After listening to this, I went from subby bottom to pain slut, f*cktoy and I can't tell you how liberating it has been. Janet and Dossie talk about the lifestyle in an enthusiastic, safe and meaningful way. Throw judgement and shame out the window and jump into your power.

An excellent introduction into kink

I found the book very informative and useful. There are some parts that are perhaps a bit outdated (yet retain their relevance), like the part about the internet. The final chapter, I found a bit 'airy-fairy' and irrelevant. Overall, I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in BDSM (including tops, this book pairs very well with The New Topping Book)

Beautiful book and an essential to curious, new and experienced bottoms

This is the classic text in learning about being a BDSM bottom. If you’ve any interest in BDSM - as a bottom, switch, top or anything else - is strongly urge you to read this book. As well as gently explaining the most important issues clearly and compellingly, it helps to demystify BDSM and remove any lingering internalised BDSM stigma we may have. The one caveat here is the chapter on HIV is rather out of date. It was written before PrEP, Treatment as Prevention and U=U (a quick google will tell you what that all means if you don’t know) which are game changers. Although following their advice will still keep you safe, some of the advice sounds slightly draconian even though it was entirely accurate back in the 2010’s.

Overall, if you are thinking about, starting or doing BDSM please do yourself a favour and read this book (and their accompanying Topping book). It will make your play SO much better, safer and hotter, and it might even save your life.

Filling in gaps

I have so much more understanding about BDSM in general but especially the mindset of bottoming and the communication, responsibilities and respect required of both players.
