Publisher's summary

An instant New York Times and USA Today best seller!

"A deft, fascinating page-turner replete with richly drawn characters and plot twists that would stump Hercule Poirot." (Kate Quinn, New York Times best-selling author of The Alice Network, The Huntress, and The Rose Code)

The New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of The Only Woman in the Room returns with a thrilling reconstruction of one of the most notorious events in literary history: Agatha Christie's mysterious 11-day disappearance in 1926.

In December 1926, Agatha Christie goes missing. Investigators find her empty car on the edge of a deep, gloomy pond, the only clues some tire tracks nearby and a fur coat left in the car - strange for a frigid night. Her World War I veteran husband and her daughter have no knowledge of her whereabouts, and England unleashes an unprecedented manhunt to find the up-and-coming mystery author. Eleven days later, she reappears, just as mysteriously as she disappeared, claiming amnesia and providing no explanations for her time away.

The puzzle of those missing 11 days has persisted. With her trademark historical fiction exploration into the shadows of the past, acclaimed author Marie Benedict brings us into the world of Agatha Christie, imagining why such a brilliant woman would find herself at the center of such murky historical mysteries.

What is real, and what is mystery? What role did her unfaithful husband play, and what was he not telling investigators?

Agatha Christie novels have withstood the test of time, due in no small part to Christie's masterful storytelling and clever mind that may never be matched, but Agatha Christie's untold history offers perhaps her greatest mystery of all.

I don’t think they had iPads in 1926

At one point, in chapter 10, the narrator slips up and says that the detective writes something in his iPad. Not a huge deal but I thought I’d mention it. Made me laugh more than anything.

The story is fantastic. I listened to the entire thing in one sitting. I absolutely recommend.

Worthless! Don’t read this book

The plot is admirable. The prose nicely done. The 2 POV structure wasn’t implemented great. I really didn’t care about the past since I wanted to get to the mystery. But the mystery dragged on so long with nothing happening until the un climactic end. No inspiring ideas or thematic thoughts. A bland story told in bland fashion. Only thing good is to say the author can write well...Now use your talent to write something worth reading!

4.5 Stars, Enjoyed

I’ve read a couple of biographies of Agatha Christie and watched a film or two of her life and I don’t think anything in this book is really far-fetched or groundbreaking. What I enjoyed is the idea of Agatha discovering her agency and owning it. Very relatable.

Can a plot be too twisty?

The narrator had a great voice and was very pleasant to listen to. The story was very intriguing. There were some definite twists I wasn't expecting, but overall I just couldn't follow it as an audiobook. I plan to get it as a hardcopy sand try it again. There are two distinct timelines running at the same time and I really feel it needed to be read by two distinctly different voices, maybe even so far as a man and a woman one for each timeline, so that I could follow it more easily.

Great story

I know that the author made up this story to explain those missing days of Mrs Christie but it felt like a very plausible explanation of the u solved mystery.

Wow. Fascinating and a fun Read

Marie Benedict could not have made this story more interesting. Agatha Christie did disappear and what a way to weave her life and love into an excellent mystery on its own. The story she reveals is so true in many women’s lives. At least it was in mine.

Torturous!

I could not finish the book. There are no compelling characters -- Agatha is a pathetic ninny. The writing is boring. The narrator does a good job, but she did not have good material to work with. A fan of Agatha Christy, I am really disappointed with this book.

Crafty!

I loved this book! I never expected a mystery inside a mystery. Ms. Benedict captured Dame Christie’s style of mystery very well.
