From New York Times best-selling author Rhys Bowen comes a haunting novel about a woman who braves her father's hidden past to discover his secrets....

In 1944, British bomber pilot Hugo Langley parachuted from his stricken plane into the verdant fields of German-occupied Tuscany. Badly wounded, he found refuge in a ruined monastery and in the arms of Sofia Bartoli. But the love that kindled between them was shaken by an irreversible betrayal.

Nearly 30 years later, Hugo's estranged daughter, Joanna, has returned home to the English countryside to arrange her father's funeral. Among his personal effects is an unopened letter addressed to Sofia. In it is a startling revelation.

Still dealing with the emotional wounds of her own personal trauma, Joanna embarks on a healing journey to Tuscany to understand her father's history - and maybe come to understand herself as well. Joanna soon discovers that some would prefer the past be left undisturbed, but she has come too far to let go of her father's secrets now....

With all the good reviews, I expected more from this book. The narrators are fine, but the story is so painfully slow to progress, and the outcome becomes more and more obvious, that I almost gave up on it part way through. I have listened to several of this author's books and won't bother with any more. Note: the descriptions of the food did make me hungry...

Story somewhat predictable, and sooooo sloooow..

Somewhat formulary. A thirty two year old tends to remember too many things from when he was three. Maybe he should have been five. But overall acceptable

Too many coincidences

Rhys Bowen’s books usually have a certain amount of humor, but this one was pretty sober. She also wrote two different story lines, which is usually difficult to execute, but Ms Bowen carries it off.

I do have to say that the main characters being so quickly pulled into the community life of the little Italian town was a bit of a stretch. And the convenient earth quakes was a little much, well one okay, more than one? Too contrived.

And I would have liked to have liked her father more.

Little Different for Rhys Bowen, but I Liked It

I enjoy every one of her books, I really liked that this one takes us out of Britain to Italy. Farleigh Field is still my favourite.

Rhys Bowen has another WWII story

Kept my interest to find out what happened to Hugo and Sofia. Nice descriptions of regional customs and foods of Tuscany.
I liked the two voices. Hugo, in his struggle to survive, and his daughter as she searches to discover her father's lost story.

WWII War Love Story

Can stop listening to it! And honestly, I won’t listen to books that don’t have great narrators! But these are a 10! Loves this book!

Spellbinding

I liked that both the male and female characters got their own voice talents. The male voice was better than the female (it felt rushed and stilted for the female) but it works overall. They don't talk at the same time since each is in a different time. The story was a good one and left a little bit for you to work out. No huge surprise endings or such, but good enough story with the characters to keep you interested in them. I really got into the book based on the characters, the affect war can have, and the fascination of the difference in the man as he was when younger and the man the female character knew as her father -- how much war, heartbreak and time can change people as well as how much letting your children get to know you can matter.

Good story, great telling, and a good mystery.

Well done - light reading, but entertaining and not completely predictable. Not sure I'd want to visit any of these characters again, but I enjoyed my time with them. Well worth the credit.

Entertaining and well done.

It was a very good story even if a little predictable with very good narrators.

I’m a huge fan of this book and the author. I love all things World War II and this story was vet6 intriguing and I’m a sucker for a happy ending.

Great story line
