As An Audiobook Very Well Read, A Decent Debut Novel

As a product this is a well read audiobook. The novel itself, a debut novel is OK. It is about a summer lived by young people in Pittsburgh. It is about romance and misadventures. One young man struggles with his sexuality and there was a little too much detail about that for me. It is not grotesque, just a little uncomfortable. There is one scene towards the end of the book that proved a page turner. I felt the end of the book was well written. It was an OK novel, but I don’t need to read this novel again. Thank You…

Good book; narrator is annoying when doing voices

I like this novel but I can't figure out why. The characters aren't that interesting. Cleveland especially seems like a person you would avoid in real life. But there's something endearing about the way Chabon wrote this thing. really captures this romanticized idea of summer in Pittsburgh. The guy doing the audiobook narration is annoying when he tries to do voices for the characters

Read do not listen.

This is like listening to the Marx brothers read Tolstoy. Bad match for a wonderful book. Not the narrator’s fault, it’s whoever picked him for this assignment.

Pittsburgh at its worst

I bought this book because I enjoyed Kavalier and Klay as well as The Yiddish Policemen’s Union. This book was different; it was awful , with metastatic adjectives and banal conversations. Yuch.

Disappointing

I normally love books from Chabon, and I tried to enjoy this one but I just couldn't. I couldn't help feeling repulsed by the main characters constant retreat into whiny attempts to avoid the reality around him. To the point where he would destroy his own prospects through compulsive lying as a base reaction without considering the situations. I have read books that have flawed characters I have been able to understand and sometimes sympathize with. Art however, I kept finding myself annoyed and wanting to slap across the back of the head and yell wake up you idiot! Not an enjoyable experience, and the ending didn't feel believable given the protagonist's track record up to that point in the novel. I'm sad to say, this is my first Chabon read that I have felt let down by. One positive I can give it, however, is that the narrator gave an excellent performance of the material.
