Publisher's summary

An impossible murder behind a locked door. Can DCI Oldroyd find the key to the mystery?

Lord Redmire’s gambling habit has placed him in serious debt. Determined to salvage his fortune by putting Redmire Hall on the map, the aristocrat performs an impossible locked-door illusion on live TV. But as the cameras roll, his spectacular trick goes fatally wrong....

Special guest DCI Jim Oldroyd has a front-row seat, but in all his years with the West Riding Police he’s never witnessed anything like this. He sees Redmire disappear—and then reappear, dead, with a knife in his back.

As Oldroyd and DS Stephanie Johnson soon discover, nearly everyone at the event had a reason to resent the eccentric lord. But how did the murderer get into the locked room—or out, for that matter?

When the only other person who knew the secret behind the illusion is brutally silenced, the case begins to look unsolvable. Because as Oldroyd and Johnson know, it’s not just a question of who did it and why—but how?

Magic and murder and more murders!

Of the three novels in this series I liked The Quartet Murders most, but THE MURDER AT REDMIRE HALL is an excellent and fun old fashioned English aristocracy murder mystery. Michael Page does a great job of narration.

Magic Room

Loved the characters and the setting. Plenty of suspects and plenty of motives. Great old fashioned mystery with no serial killers, psychopaths or unreliable narrators .

Terrible narration

Narration is unbearable. All characters sound old and the same.I wish some of these narrators would just read the book and leave the character voices alone.

Good old-fashioned English who-dun-it! Loved it.

This is the third Ellis mystery I have listened to on Audible and I eagerly await the fourth one this month. Inspector Oldroyd is the perfect English sleuth. He has been around a long time and seen it all in his beloved Yorkshire. He loves to solve a puzzle and each book has a seemingly impossible puzzle for him to solve. He keeps his thoughts and observations close to his chest and loves to spring the final answer on everyone. I do appreciate that he respects his team and welcomes their ideas, even the "lowly" beat cop and females. His disdain for the snooty aristocrats comes through loud and clear, although he is not opposed to enjoying the fine meals they provide. He isn't stupid! And this book is full of unlikable aristocrats who all have a reason to murder! The staff and workers of the estate and the local pub crowd prove much more willing to help in this complicated investigation that will keep you guessing until the end! He cannot resist having a Hercule Poirot moment as well.

Fun read

Love this series. This book was fun and reminiscent of Agatha Christie. I enjoy his references to Christie and Conan Doyle.

Modern twists to an old fashioned type mystery

I loved the narrator. Do not listen to the other reviews about him. Yes some of the characters had annoying voices but isn’t it like that in real life?
I was happy to listen to a mystery that wasn’t full of over the top language. I could’ve done without the F word but this was just what I needed. Made my mind work but was also entertained

Book 2 of 3 The Murder at Redmire Hall by J.R.Ellis

Book 2 of 3. The Murder at Redmire Hall by J.R.Ellis.
This book was just as good as the first in this series, another brilliant
‘old fashioned’ English novel with a begging, middle and satisfying explained ending. (I didn’t guess it)
Everything I love in book series, especially as they needn’t be read in order without being a disappointment. ... Now for the third book.

Good Yorkshire Mystery

As I started this, the third in the Yorkshire Murders, I was expecting a good read with engaging characters and twist in the tail. I was not disappointed in the slightest. The main characters are fun and interesting and as usual, J R Ellis sprinkled enough twists and turns to make this a more than decent read. The narrator, Michael Page, has entertained me on all of the Yorkshire Murders, and many other books, a great choice.

Great entertainment

Interesting descriptions and characters of a familisr landscape. Good old fashioned whodunit with classic denouement, but these listeners didn't solve the case until the final reveal. Will investigate further novels in the series.

Very good read,

Well crafted murder mystery with a good story line and a particularly good ending. Michael Page narrative is excellent, particularly in dialect.

An easy listen.

Another outing for the Yorkshire Detectives Oldroyd and Johnson. This is a classic Locked Room mystery. There are plenty of suspects and a few red herrings thrown in the mix and although it is very guessable what has happened it still kept my interest and I didn't quite get it exactly right.
It trots along at a decent pace and kept my interest. It didn't take more than a few hours to listen to (sped up to make it a more comfortable listen).
The main character is a very old fashioned and not quite believable chap with some slightly uncomfortable prejudices and assumptions. It is understandable given how unlikeable most of the characters involved are.
The narration is not the best and not the worse.
Overall 3.5 stars
Narration 3 stars

This series is very different to the others and I’m loving it! The accents are wonderful and this narrator is excellent! So many twists and I did not work out who did it….. kept me guessing the whole way. Can’t wait to read the next one in the series!
