Publisher's Summary

The Mom Test is a quick, practical guide that will save you time, money, and heartbreak.

They say you shouldn't ask your mom whether your business is a good idea, because she loves you and will lie to you. This is technically true, but it misses the point. You shouldn't ask anyone if your business is a good idea. It's a bad question, and everyone will lie to you at least a little. As a matter of fact, it's not their responsibility to tell you the truth. It's your responsibility to find it, and it's worth doing right.

Talking to customers is one of the foundational skills of both customer development and lean startup. We all know we're supposed to do it, but nobody seems willing to admit that it's easy to screw up and hard to do right. This book is going to show you how customer conversations go wrong, and how you can do better.

Short and to the point

The lessons and clear and to the point. Way too many books on for 100 pages more than they needed to.
This book avoids that mistake and for that I’m giving it 5 stars.
Plus super important and useful content that will help many business founders.

Must Read for All Leaders in Startups

This was very insightful for my team and I. Rob simplifies but yet stresses the importance of this stage. The statistics on the likelihood of Startups failing is probably because they didnt read this and embed it into their initial strategy. I recommend this to any entrepreneur that has the go-getter mindset, and if you don’t have it you should be inclined to do so after reading this.

Little, fantastic gem with actionable advice

This book was recommended by a mentor after describing a funnel I invented and it was such a delight to read. Rob has a very casual way of narrating the book which is exactly the tone he suggests you adopt in your interviews. The book itself is a really tight production with some very effective tools that are very easy to remember.

Practical and genuine

I loved the informal tone, even if imperfect at times, or maybe specifically because of that, and also the practical out-in-the-field advice.

It seems so simple but the techniques in here will give you jedi level customer understanding. Golden. If you’re a startup or a scaleup buy it now.

Short but concise guide to user testing. Lots of excellent advice. Audio format is good to get the main arguments/techniques/how to advice but print would probably be easier.

absolute gold

I LOVED IT!
The author is a great guy with vast experience that is in the book.
He reads marvelously, sometimes getting a little bit off the track of written text, which greatly improved the pleasure of listening.
Out of more than 30 audible books I enjoyed LISTENING to this was the most natural and pleasing experience.
Thanks a lot, Rob!

Easy to follow, transformative skills

I’m a product manager and this book is awesome!
I got into it to learn how to ask better questions, but there is so much more in it; how to get meetings (without spending lots of time), how to segment your market, when to ask and when to do

Read it / listen, and enjoy!

I wish I read this book a few years ago

This books made me cringe at least a dozens of times. Reading the book was like reading an autobiography. I have done many of the mistakes that the book mentions.

On the surface, it seems that it is about talking to customers and extracting insights that are credible. But once you dig deeper you realize the book is about strategy, validation, thinking clearly and creatively, ego traps, and how to not fall for false positives that can have detrimental effects on you and your startup.

It also provides many practical bits of advice and hacks to find customers and run the customer interview process. I truly wish I had read the book a few years ago.
