Publisher's summary

From the global best-selling author of The Girl in The Letter comes a gripping and heartbreaking novel of family secrets.

Some secrets are locked away for years....

Rebecca Waterhouse is just 13 when she witnesses her mother's death at the hand of her father in Seaview Cottage. But what else did she see?

Years later, Rebecca's daughters Iris and Jessie know their mother will never speak of that terrible night. But when Jessie goes missing, with her gravely ill newborn, Iris realises the past may hold the key to her sister's disappearance.

With Jessie in trouble, Iris must unravel a twisting story of love and betrayal in her mother's family history.

Only then will Seaview Cottage give up its dark and tragic secret...

Fantastic mystery story, wonderful characters, very moving.

I have read two of Emily Gunnis’ books now. First I read The Girl in the Letter, then read The Missing Daughter and have pre-purchased The Midwife’s Secret due to be released 10/28/21. I can’t get enough of her books! Well researched historical settings that toggle from past to present, gripping complex mystery and heartwarming and compelling characters. You won’t go wrong to purchase any of her books!

compelling story of love and consequences

I found the story especially at the end a bit hard to follow with the many characters involved. but the narration was very good and the plot compelling. makes one give thought on to why we cling to the past and how best to forgive yourself for the choices you make.

Historic fiction that is finally real

I really like the strong female characters in this novel. Being able to catch up on the work of Emily Gunnis is always a pleasure, thank you.

Forgiveness

Good story although it was sometimes hard to follow. The back and forth of the timeline was hard to figure out at times. the narrator was very good, and the character voices were distinct. This was audio with book companion.
The narrator was good with voice distinction.

Terrible phone narration

Stay clear if you don't like effects.
I think this book would be better if you read it, and didn't listen to it.
The story isn't bad, but jumps a bit.

Do not recommend

Confusing, overly dramatic, she repeated over & over throughout the book “my baby, my baby”. Really boring book, even though I listened to it to the end.

Story line is hard to follow on audio

If I were reading this book, I would be able to go back and check dates and names on the pages. But the chapters jumps from person to person and and back in time, so it’s difficult to keep up when listening to it. I finally gave up trying to keep up with who the characters were. I only made it through the first 5 chapters which was about 5 different people’s stories.
