If you can count on one thing from "Madea" Mabel Simmons, star of Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion, it's that she's got something to say. She's the beloved, hilarious, sharp-witted, pistol-packing grandmother who's watching out and speaking her mind. Now Madea is telling her own story, dishing her memoirs and hard-won, hilarious wisdom in her own inimitable voice (with a little help from her friend Tyler Perry).

Story
Steve wakes up one morning after a horrible couple of weeks in which he's lost his girlfriend, his job, his savings, and the majority of his self-respect. Dragging himself out of bed, he sleepily wanders over to the window with a warm bottled water and a handful of Advil. Looking out of his apartment window, he sees people running around crazily and a bunch of burning shrubbery. He decides to go back to sleep and see if it all goes away. When he wakes up the next time, it turns out the view from his fourth floor apartment wasn't a nightmare.

Story
Why exactly Charley Bordelon's late father left her eight hundred sprawling acres of sugarcane land in rural Louisiana is as mysterious as it was generous. Recognizing this as a chance to start over, Charley and her 11-year-old daughter, Micah, say good-bye to Los Angeles. They arrive just in time for growing season but no amount of planning can prepare Charley for a Louisiana that's mired in the past: as her judgmental but big-hearted grandmother tells her, cane farming is always going to be a white man's business.

Greyson Fox, the man, the myth, the legend. The highly sought after, self-proclaimed permanent bachelor. Or so the rumor mill goes. Sure, I’ve heard it all - but the one that stung the most was being called a heartless bastard. Love ‘em and leave ‘em, that one in particular I found to be the most humorous since only one man had ever shared my bed more than once, and he’d long since passed away.

Two engaging novellas in one book
This is a delightful pair of books. The writing and story telling is engaging and I was happy to be pulled into these stories. The first story, about a grown wife and mother, rediscovering a hidden talent and loving it, was out of the ordinary and very relatable.
I received copies of the audiobook from the author and I was pleased with the quality of the audio and the narrator did a great job. I love her voice and she made the characters come alive.
I recommend this book for readers in most age groups.
This is my honest opinion.

Beautifully written, beautifully narrated
This book has been languishing in my audible library since January. I am so angry with myself for overlooking it.
It was really good. Very relatable characters who were surprisingly well developed, seeing as these were 2 “short stories”. It did not leave me hanging as far as details, as some short stories tend to do.
I will definitely seek out this author and this narrator again. I enjoyed both stories very much!

2 great stories
I don't usually read this type of book but I am glad I read this one. The author did a great job creating likeable characters in a real life situation. The first one about a woman who had a great opportunity to do something she loved but at what cost? Does she make her family stuffer or follow her dreams? The second one about a pair of young people falling in love & some sacrifices a long the way. In the end an injury for Lela. Will her gymnastics career be over? The narrator did an excellent job as well. I highly recommend this book.

Wonderful combination
I received an ARC of this audio book from the author and have chosen to leave this review. This audio book was a refreshing experience for a couple of reasons: 1. It is two books in one. 2. The books included are entirely unconnected either through characters or story line. That being said this is my first experience with Roxanne Rhaman's writing and she is a pleasure. Her talent was brought to life well by Angela Rysk. She was an excellent choice to narrate these stories. In an honest effort to avoid a spoiler let me just say that the concept of 'family' dynamics and how they manifest sings to me in these two novellas. The angst isn't too bad and the journeys not too rough but OMG the outcome was so worth the time to listen to this audio book. I am glad I have added it to my library as it is one I will listen to again.

Dreams On Hold
After listening to this audiobook, I tried to decide what held these two stories together and I realized that both tales were about dreams that were put on hold. The first story was about a woman who had a dream to sing professionally that was put on hold to raise her family. The second story is about a student who wants to use her gymnastic skills to earn a college scholarship, but her dream is put on hold when she becomes a member of the cheerleading team. Both stories were interesting and engaging and I found them entertaining. Angela Rysk's narration is good. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

Two great stories!
The fact that these two stories were narrated by one person and yet the characters were so unique and special, is a direct testament to how great the narrator is. A good narrator can deliver believable characters. A great narrator can do so with two different stories, back to back. Consider my imaginary hat tipped.

A sweet escape from real-life
The book contains two novellas - first the story of Dyana Jackson and her chance to follow her own dream (for the first time in her life) after a video of her singing at her brothers wedding gets into the hands of a play director (musical theater). She has always supported the dreams of her husband and family, and now that it's her turn, her home life becomes strained. I loved how the play in which Dyana has the lead contains parallels between the plot and Dyana's life.
The second story had a weaker plot, but I still enjoyed the story. Layla has recently completed her freshman year of college and her family has moved to another part of the country. She goes with so she is not alone, but she struggles in the new school. She has obtained a scholarship for gymnastics, but there isn't a place for her on the team - though the coach of team asks her to send a tape and he'll consider her for the following year. Knowing she needs to practice, she tries out for and joins the cheerleading squat - where she can utilize her skills. Unfortunately, the other members are far from accepting. Fortunately, the quarterback of the football team has taken a keen interest in her, and their relationship blooms throughout the story.
Both stories were very sweet, though not without trials to get through. For me, they made for a great escape from the real world for a time.
