Publisher's summary

In a startling follow-up to the New York Times best-seller The Jesus Family Tomb, a historical detective story that unravels a newly translated document filled with startling revelations and fascinating detail about the life and times of Jesus.

Waiting to be rediscovered in the British Library is an ancient manuscript of the early Church, copied by an anonymous monk. The manuscript is at least 1,450 years old, possibly dating to the first century, Jesus' lifetime. And now, The Lost Gospel provides the first-ever translation from Syriac into English of this unique document that tells the inside story of Jesus' social, family, and political life.

The Lost Gospel takes listeners on an unparalleled historical adventure through a paradigm-shifting manuscript. What the authors eventually discover is astounding: confirmation of Jesus' marriage to Mary the Magdalene; the names of their two children; the towering presence of Mary the Magdalene; a previously unknown plot on Jesus' life, thirteen years prior to the crucifixion; an assassination attempt against Mary the Magdalene and their children; Jesus' connection to political figures at the highest level of the Roman Empire; and a religious movement that antedates that of Paul - the Church of Mary the Magdalene. Part historical detective story, part modern adventure, The Lost Gospel reveals secrets that have been hiding in plain sight for millennia.

Very well-crafted but uses lot of sketchy material

Pretty central for much of the argument, is stuff like Virgin births like mithras, without any not that this is talking about being made out of a rock, and they take texts like The secret gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Jesus wife to be authentic.
Also they put very high stock in hidden changes in many texts that is simply edited or even removed to shift theology of text, with no textual evidence to back it up.

Also they some times have either done seriously sloppy work, or outright deliberately lied, for instance when they say that Ephrems hymn 21 specifically refers to Mary Magdalene, and not Mary the mother of Jesus, and cites a passage saying The church is like Mary, but when you check the hymn, the last Mary mentioned is Mary, Jesus' mom.

At the very least it was very entertaining read. But when I see so many factually wrong and borderline lies in the material I actually knew about, and in the few things I actually checked, I find no reason at all to trust that the even more speculative and controversial stuff is trustworthy either.

Wow, will need a 2nd or 3rd time through this one

I dont know how I found this one, but I am glad I did. fantastic history, exceptionally laid out argument and a great insight into the very very early origins of christianity. you may or may not agree with his conclusions or his extrapolations from one small story, however the depth of his understanding of the holy land around the time of christ's life is worth the read.

Where was the text?!

Where was the actual text of Joseph and Aseneth?! It was supposed to be in the appendix and the whole book is based on the text, but then there was no text!!!

Never heard so much garbage in one book

Narrow minded of writer's opinion, his concept of Jesus
message and women doesn't deserve to be heard by anyone. Truly beneath anyone's intelligence to believe so much crap.

Provocative and very interesting....

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! I was raised Roman Catholic, however over the last decade or so, I have found myself at odds with their teachings. The relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus continues to intrigue me and how the early Christian Church developed and defined itself is so thoroughly examined by the author.

Great information But

The book has a prejudiced view due to the lack of an allegorical understanding. The Monks that preserved this and other codexies weren't interested in physical sex. Their interest was purely spiritual. The excesses of some groups are reminiscent of hippy movements of the 1960's through the current new age movements and this seems to be their conclusion. Other than that, it is well researched, written and presented. A knowledge of the practice of the Asthetics and their practices would aid a readers understanding.
