A librarian with a mysterious past, a war hero with a secret, and the heist of a magic painting. The Librarian of Crooked Lane is an intriguing new fantasy from C.J. Archer, the USA Today best-selling author of the Glass and Steele series.

Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

War hero Gabe is gifted with wealth, a loving family, and an incredible amount of luck that saw him survive four harrowing years of a brutal war without injury. But not all injuries are visible. Burying himself in his work as a consultant for Scotland Yard, Gabe is going through the motions as he investigates the theft of a magician-made painting. But his life changes when he unwittingly gets Sylvia dismissed from her job and places her in danger.

After securing her new employment in a library housing the world's greatest collection of books about magic, Gabe and Sylvia's lives become intwined as they work together to find both the painting and the truth about Sylvia's past before powerful people can stop them.

But sometimes the past is better left buried?

As always, the narrator, Marian Hussey is perfect. She’s one of the reasons I started listening to C. J. Archer books.

I loved how the status prior characters are revealed-and some are even in the story.

The only negative thing I can say is that the story end waaaaay too soon! I literally yelled, “Noooooooooooo!” When it ended.

I eagerly await book two!

Great Continuation of a Wonderful Story

Fun read. Easy, yet still has a mystery to keep you going. Clever main character that is competent without being an harridan or constantly needing affirmation.

Very good narrator.

Fun 1920s magical mystery tale

I think this is the first review that I have written for a book, as an adult. It isn’t my favorite book, ever, but it is the first, in a long time, that has me wishing, that the second, in the series, was already out.
The story is intriguing, the characters engaging and the addition of magic is the cherry on the top.
The narrator is a favorite of mine and does an excellent job.

Did NOT suck!

I throughly enjoyed this book. The heroine was engaging. The reader did a great job. I loved the mix of mystery, fantasy and history. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

Fun story

I loved the Glass and Steele series, but because of that I was also apprehensive about letting them go and starting in a new era. I shouldn’t have worried. This series opens roughly 30 years after the last series closes, with baby Gabe a man of the world. It’s easy to see both his mother and father in his character, and it’s great to have an India-like female enter his life. I was also very happy that many of the supporting characters are still present in this story, providing a familiar foundation for this new adventure.

Great sequel to the Glass and Steele series

I initially picked this one up as a pallet cleanser between a few other larger series and it did not disappoint. Wonderful story with great characters. I really enjoyed it.
