“Mark Sullivan has done it again! The Last Green Valley is a compelling and inspiring story of heroism and courage in the dark days at the end of World War II.”—Kristin Hannah, number one New York Times best-selling author

From the author of the number one best seller Beneath a Scarlet Sky comes a new historical novel inspired by one family’s incredible story of daring, survival, and triumph.

In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves—murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans?

The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century. But after already living under Stalin’s horrifying regime, Emil and Adeline decide they must run in retreat from their land with the wolves they despise to escape the Soviets and go in search of freedom.

Caught between two warring forces and overcoming horrific trials to pursue their hope of immigrating to the West, the Martels’ story is a brutal, complex, and ultimately triumphant tale that illuminates the extraordinary power of love, faith, and one family’s incredible will to survive and see their dreams realized.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Narrator Will Damron shows his vocal range in this work of historical fiction, set in Ukraine during WWII. The cast is large, giving Damron ample opportunity to use his expertise in differentiating characters.… He smoothly slips from the third-person narrator to a variety of voices and accents, making listeners feel present as the dramatic events unfold.” AudioFile Magazine

If you don’t believe in immigration, if you think America is “full” I challenge you to read this book and not have your opinion forever changed… I feel like a spoiled little brat after reading this book…but that being said I also feel so blessed that I have so much, I’ve never felt so lucky to have been born into absolute freedom.

Beneath a Scarlet Sky was all I needed to become a Mark Sullivan fan. The Last Green Valley, which I won through a Goodreads giveaway, lived up to my expectations. Although I have the bound copy of the book I mostly listened to the Audible version.

There were many times when I wanted to jump ahead in the story - I almost never want to do that with any book that is more than boring. Last Green Valley is anything but boring; it is a true page-turner in that I could not wait to see what happens next to this family plagued by misfortune and World War II displacement.

The book is based on the true story - verifiably true - of the Martel family and the plight of their refugee start during and after WWII in the heart of the Eastern Front between Germany and Russia. It is a story of triumphant love and dedication in the face of joy and sorrow, and most of all courage and persistence in the face of constant persecution and defeat.

If you enjoy a great story especially historical fiction, then The Last Green Valley will not disappoint.

Keep them coming, Mark Sullivan!

Hard to describe the many emotions that have been stirred. Ultimately this is a story of virtue. Reading this amid the political strife we are experiencing I find myself disappointed in the lot of us. We are creating this strife because we all think if we yell at each other loud enough, accuse one another of the worst intentions then more people will be rallied to our side. I am not minimizing the pain, suffering, or loss that many have experienced. I am not dismissing the racism or other forms of hardship we inflict on one another or permit in our society. But our problems and our differences can be resolved either legally or by mustering a little heartfelt empathy. Mark Sullivan has delivered a story based on the fact that shows us what true hate and evil look and feel like. His characters based, on actual people, were cruel enough not only to inflict unspeakable horrors on others but force other people to participate in their wickedness to control them. This is the story of good people caught in an ever-tightening vice by two of the evilest regimes our world has ever known, the Soviets and the Nazis. Read this book and thank God this is America and reconcile our differences with civility, reason, and a little understanding. Thank you Mark Sullivan for this important book. The Audible version is spellbinding and does right by your book.
