Publisher's Summary

In this pioneering contribution to the emerging men's movement, Robert Moore, a Jungian psychoanalyst and Douglas Gillette, a mythologist, examine the inner King - one of the four archetypes on the male psyche. The inner King integrates power and nurturing, firmness and caring, courage and creativity, self-affirmation and self-sacrifice. From his central position between the world of imagination and the world of action, the King within challenges every man to take up his own scepter, to dream and to make them come true. The King Within both responds to the needs being formulated by the men's movement and addresses the larger questions of male psychology.

Compelling Psychology

Through historical studies, psychological profiles of popular ideologies in both the media and in religion, the authors (Moor and Gillette) seek to answer the questions, What is Masculinity? Is it important? Where did it go and why can't we seem to find it?

Throughout the twentieth century, primarily in Western Culture, we've lost the ability to separate being a Boy from being a Man. There are no longer any defined qualities that everyone recognizes as being "manly." Many people (not merely feminists) decry men as brutes. Phrases like "be a man" or "man up" are sexist and crush the creativity of our children. The authors cite the absence of a father in many homes in recent years is an example of why its important that we soon discover, and teach our sons, exactly what it means to be a man. That men, through the help of our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, wives, lovers, and friends, must discover the King that resides in all of us.

This book raised my eyebrows a lot. The authors tend to treat wide sweeping subjects like religion and politics as examples for their psychological evaluation. If those subjects are touchy for you, then just be warned. Every so often the authors let their own internal biases slip inside this document in sarcastic gibes that made me cringe, but those moments are few. And for the most part this book is inspirational and eye-opening. I recommend it highly.

The answer to a lot of my life's struggles

This book is extremely powerful. It has guided me to a great new path where I am striving to master my king archetype. I've experienced years of therapy, self help books, meditation, etc, and I have to say, this book would have helped me even more tremendously if I had read it years ago.

A masterpiece, but it is not for everyone

Moore and Gillette lay out a map to masculine psychology in their collective work that provides a sense of peace, empowerment, and the appreciation and understanding of what it means to be a man that feels deeply personal and meaningful.

If this book seems interesting to you but you don’t want to drop the cash, there is a free audiobook of their cult classic, “King, Warrior, Magician, Lover” on YouTube, narrated by Moore and Gillette themselves. If you enjoy it, I’d highly recommend purchasing this audiobook, as the value this book could provide far exceeds the price point. If you don’t resonate with KWML though, I’d give this a pass.

Very informative hyperbole

It can take a while to sift through some of the psychological principles here but the message at the center of it all is sound, and also only 1/4 of the whole message, which is unfortunately a book that audible doesn’t have.

Very pleasant

I've listened to this one at least three times so far and enjoy it each time. The narrator really sounds like he is very invested in what he's saying. Great content.

Decent short introduction into the archetypes

I found the material and narration a bit rote and oversimplified but there is some value in it

Every Man Can Benefit

Men need the King archetype more than ever today. This information opened my eyes for myself and will be very helpful for my son as he grows into manhood. Our society blames “men” for a variety of ills without acknowledging the blessing true balanced masculinity brings.

This is the book that I have been waiting to hear!

Have you ever listened to an audio book that drove a point home 80%? This is not that book. This is a home run straight into the psyche of modern man. If you are a man, or if you know a man, this book is worth your time and attention.

Something to seriously consider

It is true that man are loosing their way however were moving away from being usurped by rulers who demand a tithe from us. Yes we do have a center within us that is masculine and only when we are centred do we fully realise ourselves. This is an interesting take on something that is a deep and nebulous as our unconscious minds. Men need to take responsibility for their own actions. This book gives only an indication and a point to start from. Good luck seekers. It is a journey that takes a lifetime to realise..

Worth listening to? Yes. Recommended fully.

Mixed feelings

This book definatly does have a lot to teach me although there are a few things new readers should be weary of.

1. The author uses 50 words when 5 would suffice. Sure it makes them sound really smart and is more accurate if drafted as a law but comes off as long winded which isn't ideal for an audio book that is only 3 hours. Furthermore, it can make the point get lost in a sea of noise and jargon when it isn't necessary.

2. The author will not go over what the 4 archetypes (king, magician, warrior, lover) are or their characteristics at the start. Look these up first This! This is assumed knowledge and not knowledge that I had before starting.

3. Will sometimes refer to a concept and continue before explaining the concept. If you dont understand, don't rewind, keep listening and they explain it after (sometimes).

4. Refers to other famous names in the field and their work. This is good although it cam come off as gospel truth when there is no definitive way to determine if they are correct but that is the nature of the field. (I'm just sceptical of people referring to "facts" when in reality, it is just the best guess by an expert).

Promises more than delivers

Somewhat superficial analysis of the archetypal king - there is mention of how it relates to other archetypes but it is not a depth profile or the process to incorporate the archetype except the suggestion to ask your subconscious for a sign. It is fairly fluff material except for some passages which are inspiring without delivering a methodology of approach or even delving into the archetype itself beyond the somewhat obvious. It becomes repetitive as well because the few points are driven over again and again. Worth a listen if you have t heard of archetypes before or never read about the energy of the organising King archetype

A must for all humans who want to bring a real sense of meaning and fulfillment into their lives, learning how to listen to and access the wise king within you is undoubtedly the most important skill a young man can cultivate, and surely a life affirming skill for any human to be in touch with.

this is essential material that every man should take in and metabolize. my only complaint with this is that it's way too short. I will need to find something more substantial. a good starting place, but a starting place only.
