Publisher's Summary

Now a major motion picture from director Ridley Scott starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver

The sensational true story of murder, madness, glamour, and greed that shook the Gucci dynasty, now fully updated with a new afterword

On the morning of March 27, 1995, four quick shots cracked through Milan’s elegant streets. Maurizio Gucci, heir to the fabulous fashion dynasty, had been ambushed, slain on the steps to his office by an unknown gunman. Two years later, Milan’s chief of police entered the sumptuous palazzo of Maurizio’s ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani - nicknamed “the Black Widow” by the press - and arrested her for the murder.

Did Patrizia kill her ex-husband because his spending was wildly out of control? Did she do it because he was preparing to marry his mistress? Or is it possible Patrizia didn’t do it at all?

The Gucci story is one of glitz, glamour, and intrigue - a chronicle of the rise, near-fall, and subsequent resurgence of a fashion dynasty. Beautifully written, impeccably researched, and widely acclaimed, The House of Gucci is a pause-resisting account of high fashion, high finance, and heartrending personal tragedy.

Just read the cliff notes or wait for the movie.

This book spent way too much time on detailed runs of stories that contribute nothing to build the true story. The details on designs overwhelmed the book. It was so mechanical. The true story got lost until more than halfway through the book. If you are super intrigued about how to NOT run a fashion or a family business, then you might like this book. Read a summary or maybe wait to watch the movie.

This book is excellent blend of autobiography, novel and analytics. My best book about the fashion titans so far.

Not what I expected

I couldn’t finish it. I didn’t experience any intrigue. I thought it sounded like a dry textbook in some places. Just not very interesting to me personally.

This is not a true crime novel

By the subtitle I thought this was going to be a true crime novel. It’s not. It’s kind of interesting and I finished the whole thing. But it wasn’t what I expected.

I Don’t Get It

I listened for 2-hours and literally nothing happened, so I gave up. If you haven’t grabbed my attention within 2-hours, it’s not going to work out for me.

Not what I expected

I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this. I suppose I wanted the story that’s going to be the movie. This isn’t it. This is a comprehensive biography of the start to today Gucci family. This story starts in 1800’s Florence with the great great grand father. About 2 hours ish is dedicated to the murder of Mauricio Gucci. It was long and drawn out.

Hard no for me

OMG boring. If you want to learn the history of the Gucci business any absolutely anyone they were associated with, then this is the book for you. Very misleading.

So boring

This book did not get interesting. I really tired, but I couldn’t stick with it. I was planning on returning it, but I think audible removed that feature.

Tedious recounting of an interesting family story

I am an aficionado of biographies and family histories and love to delve into the fine detail of the lives of others - for instance Robert Caro's life of LBJ in 5 volumes is a favourite - however this book never gets beyond tedious. The story of the Gucci family should have been intriguing but Sara Forden just doesn't capture it for me. I tried my best to stick with it but had to give up after 4 hours of listening. Narration isn't great either - everyone is given the same Italian accent except for Paulo's second wife who has some sort of Coronation Street English accent. Hope the film is more interesting.

Brilliant listen .. Can't wait to see the movie

The author captures the whole time and feel, of the mindset that Gucci conveyed.
Sad, though in part talented individuals.
A rollicking good book.

a long and sordid story. Well worth the 16 + hours required to listen to the whole Gucci saga.

I cannot recommend this stunning book more highly as it is a gripping expose into one of the worlds great European fashion houses that is brimming with insight, empathy and humour.

Boring

Not much energy in the book. It was like hearing a random family tree…he begat …her…who married him…who designed a new briefcase….

Great listen

The book was a bit slow at the start I felt bogged down with all the different generations and companies spoken about but as the story continued I really enjoyed it.

Thorough, interesting and fun

Well written and presented story. Not only providing insight of Gucci, but the fashion industry. Learned more about the wealth, life and cut throat nature of the business…and the tragedy.
