Once every year, in the city of Sunja, gladiators Baylus, Goll, and Halm meet in the arena known as Sunja’s Pit. Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

40 ROLLS OF ASS CLEANING GOODNESS
If my headline bothers you, stop now, you will hate this book. Augustus Berry is not the most cultured of men. He is fat, balding and loves to drink himself to a stupor. He has no military experience (how unique is that for a Zombie book.), he survives, because he has watched enough horror movies to know the correct way to behave in an apocalypse.
This is gory, scary and smelly. Yea, you will smell things you don't want to smell. It is not just bloody and gory, it is very scary. Watch out for the Stephen King's "Misery" scene, but mostly watch out for the babies!!
At the time I am writing, this is free. Get this in your library before someone changes their mind. This is the best short story I have listened to, Paid for, or otherwise in a long time.
R.C. Bray is one of those narrators that is the tipping point for a book, when you are trying to decide if you should purchase.

Meh
I do agree with a previous reviewer that this story seems to be geared toward men, which is fine. More importantly, the writing is mediocre. I get bored with statements like, "he scratched his balls, then turned to the right" as if scratching balls has anything to do with his decision to turn a corner (maybe this is female ignorance -- perhaps balls help a great deal with directions, who knows?!) OR "he used his ass to open the door, then scratched his balls one last time before raising his gun." ... Ok...?? Story itself is ok, I think the situation w/ Alice was fun/entertaining but overall just meh with the whole thing.

Not Sure About This Series?
I got this after listening to the Mountain Man and I get why the reviews for The Hospital are on the average side. In the Hospital you get a taste of who Gus is but just a taste. Do yourself a favor and get The Mountain Man. You'll get to know Gus better and enjoy Mr. Blackmore's fine story telling skills. I really liked that story and I am looking forward to more of the Mountain Man.

Your worse fears about hospitals and then some!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, because it is a nice short and sharp story. With excellent narration and it will leave the listener wanting more!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hospital: The FREE Short Story: The First Mountain Man Story?
I like how the main character does a roving commentary of his plans and habits
Have you listened to any of R. C. Bray’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Another one of Bray's excellent works. I buy books now sorely because of his narration
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Attack of the blood sucking babies

Not Your Usual Last Action Hero
What other book might you compare The Hospital: The FREE Short Story: The First Mountain Man Story to and why?
I am sure "The Walking Dead" series came to most peoples mind.
Any additional comments?
I love it when I get a taste of a book especially just a sample of one like "The Hospital" makes me more inclined to spend my credits or buy it. The narrator R. C. Bray set the tone for the book he keep me mesmerized to the storyline. I like the fact that that the main character of the book is not no super hero but just an ordinary man without any training in weapons or combat just a "plain Joe" that everyone can relate so far. I will get the next in the series after enjoying this sample.

I Need More Mountain Man
My only complaint about The Hospital is that its too short. Blackmore introduces us to a world that has been ravaged by some sort of plague, thank you for not getting into it, the type of world that I have become accustomed to. The Mountain Man Augustus Berry, star of the series, reminds me of a character that I know of but cannot for the life of me remember who, there is a reason he is a survivor, let me leave it at that. This is a short account of one of his scavenging run where he decided to scour a hospital for supplies. Here he encounters a demented crazy woman and finds that there are many thing much more frightening that the undead. If you are like me and want another zombie series to listen to, please join me and check out the rest of the series in the very near future.
Audiobook purchased by me.

Gruesome.....but enjoyable..
I wasn't sure whether I was going to enjoy this particular genre, however I was pleasantly surprised at this one. The story is rather gruesome, though one wonders whether the narrative would have quite the same effect without being so graphic. On the whole I enjoyed this. The general premise is that Gus Berry is in need of supplies, and the hospital has what he wants. In his way, however, are various zombie creatures within the hospital and around, intent on feeding on his flesh.
I've put more of the 'Mountain Man' on my wish list. Recommended.

Very discriptive
What made the experience of listening to The Hospital: The FREE Short Story: The First Mountain man Story the most enjoyable?
I thought it was very descriptive, and held my interest even though I wasn't sure what to expect next. It is not a book I should have listened to driving home on my own on a dark wet night. But saying that I then sat up in bed listening to the end because I needed to know what happened.
What other book might you compare The Hospital: The FREE Short Story: The First Mountain man Story to, and why?
Can honestly say it was as scarey as Dean Coombes Watchers. They are not my normal read.
What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?
Excellent performance
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me hold my breathe in suspense. Makes your heart beat fast. Not good when driving
Any additional comments?
I needed to Finnish the book but won't be listening to it again, that is just me just not in my comfort zone.

babies... BABIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was so f****** scary. It gave me the extended TWD episodes (you remember that one of the special short's with the nurse, right?), kinda vibe, but it was original in a completely different way. The sense of urgency and terror was very well written and enjoyable to read, it was both relatable and terrifying, and the characters were well fleshed out too. I was very lucky that this story was a free one, because I immediately bought the whole series, it looks like it will be quite a read, so will keep you posted!
If you want to try and see if this style of writing and exposition is your cup of tea, give it a go! You will not regret it.

Dark zombie short story
This is quite a dark, gory zombie tale.
Darker than the Walking Dead, In my opinion. Some of the aspects of the story seem to be in there just for shock value. Not really my taste, I won't bother with any more in the series.

Not a Bad Intro
As a brief into to the Mountain Man series this isn't bad at all, I've read the first of the Mountain Man books and it's a series I intend to complete in time. The narration is of course top notch from R.C. Bray on what I see as his home turf.
Compared to that first book what I would say this is this is actually the most horrific part I have read so far! It does cross a line most other zombie stories have not. It's partly set in the maternity ward to give you a clue.
I think it steers well though and for a free hour's worth of audio I would struggle to think of anything much better if you like the genre. Gus is a character I am happy to invest time in.

Easy reading
If you just want something to while the hours away then this will do you fine.... It lacks the elegance of others in its genre but the basics are there and it's very easy to get into the main character..

Too much blood.....
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No it was too graphic for me
What was most disappointing about Keith C. Blackmore’s story?
Loopholes... For instance he had diesel for the truck but no toilet rolls??
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narration was good and clear.
Was The Hospital: The FREE Short Story: The First Mountain man Story worth the listening time?
No
Any additional comments?
A good book if you like blood and violence! Not a taxing storyline.

Brilliant Marketing Strategy
If you could sum up The Hospital: The FREE Short Story: The First Mountain man Story in three words, what would they be?
It made buying the Mountain Man Saga "a must".
What other book might you compare The Hospital: The FREE Short Story: The First Mountain man Story to, and why?
This was my first book in this genre (even though I love The Walking Dead TV series). This book is superbly written and narrated and is very similar to the Mountain Man series.
Which character – as performed by R. C. Bray – was your favourite?
Crazy Alice. R.C. Bray is by far my favourite audio book "narrator" - when he performs a character I actually forget it's the same guy narrating and start to "buy into" the character as a real person. Bray's portrayal of crazy Alice was amazing. I really believed it was a woman and a crazy one at that. Just brilliant.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Definitely.
Any additional comments?
I don't know who's idea it was to give away for free this chapter/scene from the Mountain Man saga but it is a piece of marketing genius. This is not the type of book I would read or listen to but I thought I'd give it a try as it was free and R.C.Bray was narrating it (a brilliant narrator). Not only did this free sample force me into getting the first 3 books but it actually introduced me to this genre.

the hospital by Keith c. Blackman (1st of mountain man story).
Great short story to listen to, when unwinding for bed. Started to listen and very quickly (unlike some books) I was well and truly hooked !!!!. Even continued on once the story was over, to listen to the next mountain man saga, again hooked before the end of chapter one !.

Great
Would you consider the audio edition of The Hospital: The FREE Short Story: The First Mountain man Story to be better than the print version?
Yes. I love that the story gets told so well
Have you listened to any of R. C. Bray’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Keeps up the momentum through the other stories
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The gore factor and the way he describes so was but so gross but great narration throughout the book. I was intrigued to know more of this story
Any additional comments?
I brought the 2nd one because I need to know what happens

Over the top gore
It's a zombie book so I guess... what do you expect? Not truly brutal or shocking, just gore and cliche horror type character/monsters to the point where it's cheesy. It's a bit of a pity because it was OK before it went over the top.

Vivid
I have had this short Audio clip for quite some time, so long in fact I can’t remember how long.
I listened to this while I cooked dinner and pottered around in the kitchen. I honestly could see the scenes as though watching a movie it was so vivid. That Alice was honestly so freaking creepy. I won’t give anything away but I have to say why the heck would anyone in a zombie apocalypse go into a hospital on their own? Especially after they didn’t stake it out for a while! This infuriated me but you know it takes all types. Anyway, great story and it doesn’t go as long as it says - the last 37 ish minutes is the start of another story which was great, I’m off to find it.
Enjoy this one 🙂

Not worth it
I admit - I downloaded it because it was free and wondered if the series would be interesting. First of all, very little happens. Secondly, the blood and guts seemed to be more for the sake of it rather than furthering any action or story line. And, i admit, zombies are not really my thing. [But I was prepared to have zombies if the rest of the book was okay.]

Good insight into why Gus avoids hospitals
Quite a visceral short story, only went for just shy of an hour. It was a solid almost chapter addition to a prequel. You could do without as it isn't integral to the story line, but great if you are a fan of the series.

Not worth paying for.
One hour story, then a preview of the series. Series is fantastic. This is too short and expensive for what you get.

10 Out Of 10, and then some
WOW! This is one GREAT book.
I had not read a Keith C Blackmore book prior to this, nor had I heard R C Bray, ....But I have been blown away by the collaboration.
Love the storyline and the characters, very believable, and I Love, Love, Loved the narrator R C Bray, every character's voice, was spot on, so much so, I could actually, sort of had an image in my mind of the character, no BS, seriously amazing and his voice is so easy to listen to.
So all in all, GREAT book, LOVED IT, Tip, Top, ...................... now onto the next

Story
Named sole heir to her aunt's estate, Charity Gannon arrives in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, hoping to find a link to her past. She's not looking for lost treasures; she is searching for a connection to the aunt she barely knew. What she finds is a 30-something-year-old mystery and questions with no answers. A sad, secluded cottage, all but hidden amid the vines. A man's suit of clothes, tainted with dried blood and a bullet hole. Four forgotten boxes, stuffed into a large bag and buried in the far corners of the shed.
