Publisher's Summary

The second book in the epic Evermen Saga.

With the fate of their homeland still in jeopardy, siblings Ella and Miro must face the Primate’s evil as he discovers a new technique: a way to extract essence from human blood.

The Primate has been temporarily defeated, but his home was once inhabited by the Evermen, and their ancient secrets still remain there. As the mysterious Evrin sets out to destroy everything he can, the Primate stumbles upon an ancient book that tells of a hidden relic with unfathomable power - and he will stop at nothing to find it.

Realizing the solution to defeating the Primate and saving the Empire is tied to the hidden relic, Ella, Miro, Killian, and the desert prince Ilathor must race to reach the relic before the Primate…or suffer disastrous consequences.

Good story, there were a few to many time powerful female characters turned into valid little girls at the prospect of getting kisses. Over all good book

solid not spectacular

I enjoyed the book. I thinking there is something with the second book of a series. I find they rarely live up. This one did not hook me in right away, but I'm good I stucj it out. I definitely plan to continue the series.

So much promise but in the end meh

Since I have found that some series struggle in the first book on the balance of world building vs. story, I generally give a series two books to plead their case for continuation. While better than the first, I will not be getting book three. An ongoing gripe is the lack a flesh on supporting characters. How many women are introduced, given a five minute back story, and then killed within the next chapter or so to advance Amber’s story? Even her husband could have used a chapter or interlude to give him true dimension. It would have made his decision to answer the call to battle so much more meaningful. As it was, we are simply expected to trust that he loves her so deeply, in spite of their arranged marriage and age difference. More back story or exposition on the bad guys, to make them multidimensional would also have helped. The primate, Moragon, and Xavros had no redeeming qualities or past to explain their evilness. One note villains lead to very unfulfilling deaths...there’s just no satisfaction in the final comeuppance. It feels like the author wrote the outline and filled in just enough to have a book. Didn’t have the gripping depth and humor of Theft of Swords, the popcorn, B movie fun of Hard Magic, or the cutting edge sass of Iron and Magic (and related Kate Daniels series). I would recommend those series over this one.

I Think I Forgot to Breathe

This, the second installment in the Evermen Saga, seemed to go at warp speed from beginning to end. I hardly felt like I drew a breath through the entire story. I know that this epic saga will be one that I listen to again and again, as it's simply got so much going on constantly. The layers of intrigue abound as we just barely breach the surface of who the Evermen actually were. Wonderfully written, beautifully woven, artfully crafted. I remain stunned by the force of this story.

Too much battlefield wars.

I got tiered of battlefield wars one after another. it droned on and on. There could have been other ways to victories with so much magic. The underlying story was good and the characters were very interesting. It was the only thing that kept me reading. The narrator was excellent.

A great sequel

As the title states, Hidden Relic is a great sequel to Enchantress. I think I actually preferred this a little more. This might be due to the fact that the slowness of the first book isn't as present now we know the characters and the world has been explained.

Hidden Relic shows you a whole new area of the world Maxwell has created and a brand new people to go with it. I found this book a heck of a lot less predictable than its predecessor and, for that, I found myself finding more hours of the day to put into it.

Simon Vance does a good job of narrating again in this book; his voice seeming to fit the story and characters perfectly. His emotional range is fantastic, hitting excitement, pain, sorrow and grief almost flawlessly.

Ella and Miro's tales continue off in their own direction and you genuinely get a feel for how big the world in which the story is set is.

Excellent story and narration

The characters continue to develop nicely as they grow older and face more trials and tribulations. I was swept along with the story and care what happens to Ella and Miro and their increasing circle of friends.

Getting Better

We really get down and nasty in this book when the Primate starts to extract essence from human bodies. Meanwhile Ella has been kidnapped by a desert tribe. Predictably, the Prince, Llathor, falls for her. War is coming and no-one is going to be able to escape. There will be losses, on both sides. This is by no means a brilliant fantasy, but there is enough to keep you interested and it a very easy to listen to book. Simon Vance does a very good job as narrator, which always help.

another brilliant listen

If you enjoyed The Enchantress you will love this second book. The story is again of an adventure and the diverse paths each character takes. The narration is brilliant and I did not really hear the narrator as I was captivated by the characters and their stories. Total escapism.

A good continuation

Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favourite?

This man is rapidly becoming one of my favourite narrators. He has such a good range of voices, to such an extend that I've started searching for him alone on audible. For me no higher praise exists.

Any additional comments?

I do believe that our Mr. Maxwell is an incurable romantic at heart. Really liked the second book, although did find it in places a little predictable. Have high hope for the third book which I’ve just started, this one has taken a different tack, and I think will develop the story much more than this book.

Stereotyped and disappointing

Surprised by the other reviews, this story is very obvious and underwhelming. The characters were all cliches and stereotypes of characters we've all seen too many times before.

Lovely fantasy with great mythical lore.

Only downside is the length. Could have been two books instead of four. Still a great listen.

Fantastic adventure

The first book in this series was really great and upon starting this one I was apprehensive to find out whether it could continue to be as intriguing. Yes, very much, keep going people, it’s a fantastic tale 🐨
