The second book in The Nightfall Saga, the stunning new epic fantasy series set in the world of The Demon Cycle, from New York Times bestselling author Peter V. Brett

“Heart-wrenching, smart, and modern . . . The Desert Princehas set a new standard for fantasy.”—Wesley Chu, author of The War Arts Saga

Humanity thought the war with demonkind was over. Now, after less than a generation to rebuild, the demon corelings have returned with a vengeance. The Spear of Ala—the fortress that stands at the gates of the demon’s hive—is the last bastion against the horde, and reports say it may already have fallen.

Olive Paper is expected to take the vanguard in the fight. Only an heir of Kaji can wield the artifact that opens the gates of the Spear of Ala, and as Ahmann Jardir’s child, Olive seems destined for a role as leader and savior. But Olive does not wish to follow in her father’s footsteps any more than she did her mother’s.

Darin Bales was born with supernatural senses that he struggles to process, and even those who love him believe he can barely take care of himself. Yet to save his mother from the clutches of Alagai Ka, the demon king, Darin will brave anything to mount a rescue.

Darin and Olive each strive to walk their own path but find themselves inextricably tied to the legacies of their parents and to a fated confrontation with the demon king and his new hatchling queen.

If they fail, humanity may not survive.

Another perfect addition to the series. Watching the kids step into their own is amazing.

Coming of Age

Really enjoyable. There is a terrific way that Brett builds from book to book. I noticed this through the Demon Cycle series. It’s as if his personal skill set was growing and strengthening with each new book. This was doubly true for me when listening to this audiobook after Desert Prince. So much so, that I am now questioning if the case truly is that Brett is doing this quite consciously, as if he is baiting the reader like a sword fighter feinting against a new opponent, only to reveal his full skill set as the battle draws to a close. The progression is stellar and if this is in fact a conscience decision on his part, it is a technique I feel most authors don’t have the stones to risk employing.
The combination of two narrators is something I really enjoy. Although during Desert Prince I found the voicing of Daren to not be completely enjoyable- nor equal to that of Olive, it was extremely well done in this book. It now has me thinking that this is just a result of the growth of the character, as it is now very apparent that both narrators are extremely skilled.
Loved it.

Brett builds book by book!

I absolutely loved the first series, thanks for making following up with the next generation and hitting so MANY points about what it is to grow up in a parent's shadow, and to not know where you belong in the world, and friendship most of all.

THANK YOU Peter!

love it!

I loved this book. This book series is what got me back into reading. I've probrably read 100 books over the last year or 2. Keep the content coming, Peter!

Work of art!

I thought this book a good addition to the series and look forward to the next one.

Evolving characters

This book was a lot slower than The Desert Prince (and the Demon Cycle for that matter). I actually almost considered giving it 3 stars while I was about halfway through. I initially thought that Peter V. Brett was going to save all the good stuff for the next book, but once you get to that halfway point it picks up speed quickly. The first half was mostly character development which allowed the second half to be all action.

I think this was the best decision for this book. This one made me like Darren, Olive, and a lot of the new characters a lot more. That all made the stakes a lot higher for the final act. Their growth within this book probably the most important aspect. This entry was very character driven. The narrators did a great job emphasizing their character arcs.

I listened to the dramatized version of The Desert Prince because it was free. But since the dramatized version of The Hidden Queen is split in two parts, it was more cost effective to get this version. And I’m not disappointed. The narrators took some getting used to compared to the dramatized version, but towards the end they definitely grew on me. They did an excellent job at conveying the intense emotions the characters felt in the final act. I felt pretty immersed.

I think overall I liked this entry more than the Desert Prince. I can’t wait for the next book!

Great Build Up

Olive can't help but be the child she is and it's really grating. Why is the fate of the world in the hands of juvenile brats?
